vermonter16 Posted January 19, 2007 #1 Share Posted January 19, 2007 Is the snorkeling that bad in Cozumel since the hurricane? DH and I were considering the Three Reef Snorkeling Excursion through Carnival but we really don't want to do it if there's nothing to see or if it isn't that good... billeelou Posted January 22, 2007 #2 Share Posted January 22, 2007 Cozumel itself was damaged, but the reefs below are better, worse and the same as before. In some pl;aces the winds destroyed the reefs, in other places it uncovered some real neat rock formations, in others it had no effect, so YES...fill in whatever you want but do not miss snorkling in coz!! Stevesan Posted January 23, 2007 #3 Share Posted January 23, 2007 Snorkeling frrom the shore at Coz was pretty good until Hurricane Wilma. Unfortunately, the near shore reefs suffered extreme damage. The coral was virtually destroyed and will take a long time to recover. The outer reefs, such as the aforementioned Palancar and Columbia, experienced far less damage and are still world class. However, if at least two of your "Three Reef" trip are to outer reefs, you'll be good to go.
susanNjay Posted January 24, 2007 #4 Share Posted January 24, 2007 We were there in November. My husband went scuba diving while I snorkeled with our two daughters. It was terrific. We used scuba with alison and she got a snorkeling guide for us. Don't miss it!
justcruzn Posted March 22, 2007 #5 Share Posted March 22, 2007 How would we get to Palancar and Columbia? Who should we use?
Stevesan Posted March 22, 2007 #6 Share Posted March 22, 2007 How would we get to Palancar and Columbia? Who should we use? There are lots of really good operators in Coz. I can personally recommend Eagle Ray Divers.: http://www.eagleraydivers.com/ Their three reef trip ventures out to Palancar Gardens. The two reef trips stay on the near reefs, such as Dzul Ha. Gala Posted April 8, 2007 #7 Share Posted April 8, 2007 We have just come back from Cozumel where we arranged for a snorkeling tour with Roswitha of Mystic Snorkeling. It was terrific! She first brought us to a very special place with lots of star fish and then we went on to Palancar reef and Columbia Shallows. Roswitha and her assistant actually were in the water with us all the time, reading the currents and leading our small group accordingly. Needless to say, I felt safer than on any other snorkeling trip! We saw abundance of fish and coral and did not feel we were missing anything at all. It was definitely The Highlight of our cruise. DiveMaster Posted April 8, 2007 #8 Share Posted April 8, 2007 Was there with my kiddo diving shallow (he's currently rated to 40 feet) in January. Our trip was excellent. Your experience may vary a bit by site, but should be fine. Dave

madisonswims Posted April 27, 2007 #10 Share Posted April 27, 2007 How would we get to Palancar and Columbia? Who should we use? Another vote for Eagle Ray Divers! They were great and took us to ares with outstanding sites. We say a nurse shark, rays, barracudas! The coral where they took us was making a strong comeback. GREAT! cvschmitt Posted May 18, 2007 #13 Share Posted May 18, 2007 We just returned from snorkeling in Cozumel. We took a taxi to Dzul Ha beach (@$10 1-way) and it was great. The water was very clear and lots of fish.
Luvsnorkeling Posted May 28, 2007 #14 Share Posted May 28, 2007 That's great to hear that Dzul Ha is building back up. We want to try a trip to the deeper reefs in the morning and maybe end up at Dzul Ha in the afternoon on our own. We're trying to get up a trip for Sept. 7 with Roswitha Flury but still need several more snorkelers to go along to bring down the cost. If you are interested in a more personalized trip than the cruise ship "cattle boat" snorkel trips, please check out the info on Roswitha in the post by Gala above and contact Roswitha directly. Hoping to meet you on board with Rosy on the 7th!

Luvsnorkeling Posted May 30, 2007 #16 Share Posted May 30, 2007 The price Roswitha just quoted us was $65 per person with five snorkelers. Right now, for the Sept. 7 trip we have two. Every other person after 5, reduces the price per person by $1 a head. She can take up to 10 on one trip.
