stew300 Posted February 12, 2007 #1 Share Posted February 12, 2007 When on your own shopping or taking a taxi did you find that they would often take US dollars? Euro? or mostly wanted local currency?
Wendy The Wanderer Posted February 12, 2007 #2 Share Posted February 12, 2007 I always get a little local currency at the "change" in the airport--I think it's the polite thing to do in a foreign country. Others happily use USD. Euros would work as well. Just don't expect change back in the same currency, I would imagine.
Ephraim Posted February 12, 2007 #3 Share Posted February 12, 2007 Most countries have very little interest in US dollars. Caribbean Islands and Mexico are used to dealing with US dollars and they are easy to deal with in Israel. In Canada we are used to it, we just give you a horrible exchange rate and give you change in Canadian dollars. (American coins are always dealt with at par, no exchange). Banks often charge a fee for the exchange, so small amounts are problematic. I use local currency or credit cards. When it comes to tips, cash in Euro or US dollars is fine. They will know how to get it exchanged, they often get tips in foreign currency.
