What to carry passport/CC in while in port?

I have been reading about the need to carry your passport (or a copy at a minimum) and I am wondering the best way to do this while in port. What do you put yours in, just a backpack or small purse or something? We are going cave tubing in Belize and I don't know where our stuff will be. Any ideas on how to keep our stuff safe and dry while on our adventures?

TIA!:)

I think it would depend on where I was going to be and if there was any chance I might miss the ship. I'd never take the original if I were just going to go shopping in port, or spend any time in the crowded port shopping area, too much of a chance being mugged or pickpocketed.

Passports are a valuable commodity and thieves would love to get their hands on them. Although not as good as the real thing, a photo copy would help tremendously if you should get left behind in port.

If I were going on an independent excursion and the time was iffy getting back to the ship, or the distance from port quite far, then I would take the original. I would carry it in a document holder that was strapped to my body, like a money belt. Not in a purse, waist pack or backpack. Something like this:
