Alcohol question

Hey gang! Got a quick question. I haven't cruised since I gave up drinking.:D When I cruised in the past I usually drank a lot. In fact, I always drank a lot on a cruise. Pretty much from morning till night. It was a big part of my cruise experience. As I stated I have given up drinking. I am thinking of cruising on Freedom. I am not worried that I will drink, just worried that maybe the experience sober will not be enjoyable. I would hate to waste time and money on a needed vacation if I will not enjoy it like I have in the past. I realize it will not be the same but will I not enjoy the cruise not being tipsy/drunk. Should I look into a land based vacation? Should I just go?? So for those who are "in my boat", what have your experiences been? Thanks guys:) And by NO means am I looking down on those that do drink and have a good time. For me, drinking has been a problem.

Good for you. Drinking makes me tired anymore. On my last cruise I would have drinks at noon and be tired all night. Are you going with someone? Hopefully they wont drink. Just try to get in there and participate anyways... do that belly flop. hehe

Congratualtions on the not drinking!

Why do't you check out what the 'friends of Bill' do for fun?

Hey Trevor! Good to see you again! Please send me an email we need to catch up!

My brother and his wife of 37 years do not significantly drink maybe a glass of wine with dinner once or twice all week on a cruise. I think they have done about 25 cruises. Remember the primary reason to cruise is to travel and to see places. It is not to drink, although if you are going to drink it is a good place because you don't have to worry about crashing the car on the way home. My mother has been on about 10 cruises and she has never had a drop of alcohol to touch her lips in her whole life.

Hi Trevor!

Ditto what jc said! I drink very little......maybe one "foo-foo" drink a day, maybe none. My mom doesn't drink at all, and we have been on 25 cruises together! I think you will have a blast anyway, and maybe will remember more about the cruise when you get home! ;)

Things are still the same......laying out at the pool, dining, shows at night, casino, getting off and exploring the islands........etc.

If you are worried about maybe "being bored", why not try a shorter 4-5 day cruise? Although, on the ship you are talking about, I don't think you would get bored!!!!

Denise

P.S. Congratulations on being on the wagon!!!!! Way to go!

Hey Cat and JC!! great to see some of the old names still around. Thanks everyone for the advice. To be clear, I am not looking for a pat on the back or come across as looking down on those who drink. I just took it to the extreme. The 4 day cruise sounds like a great idea. I have a special someone who will probably cruise with me and I am sure we will have a great time. I guess my concern is my only experience cruising has always been a "binge cruise" for me. So I am sure my experience sober will be different. And different is not always bad!

JC, sending an email now.

By NOT drinking you will be able to enjoy the cruise more (JMO). I've done both -- drank a little to much in the evening and then basically "wasted" the next morning or day because of it.

Cruising more fun when you are sober and able to enjoy it more! Go...you will not be disappointed.

I don't consider myself to have ever been "in your boat", but when I started cruising, I immediately went back to my early 20 drinking days. And then up till 4 at night, and then start it all over again the next day.

Somewhere, that wore off; I can't think of the last time I got plastered on a ship, and still love the experience.

AND WELCOME BACK!

I'd look at it this way, if you had to drink to have a good time on a cruise, then a cruise vacation maybe wasn't your cup of tea.

I think if I were you I'd look at it as starting over. The short cruise sounds like a good idea to see if you like cruising without the boozing. Personally, I think you'll find cruising is more enjoyable when you can see it through sober eyes. It really comes down to finding enjoyment in the little things in life.

I am not a big drinker, so can't talk from experience, but think that you would enjoy a cruise with fresh, now sober eyes. If you used to drink a lot when you cruised, much of the experience would have been blurred by the alcohol anyway.

It is important to think what sort of things you like and what cruiseline, ship and itinerary will suit you and your "someone special" best. I think that going with "someone special" - especially if they are new to cruising - will help you to enjoy and experience the cruise in a whole new way anyway....

A short cruise, combined with some land vacation, sounds great.

Congratulations and very best wishes for a great vacation :)

You sound like me. I used to think that it would be impossible to have fun without drinking. Boy, was I ever wrong!!!

You'll have a wonderful time. It will just be different and like you said different isn't necessarily bad. About the only thing I don't do on board is hang out in the bars. I love it that RCI will make all sorts of virgin froo-froo drinks. (I love my umbrellas!) Do check out the Friends of Bill meetings. (On my last cruise, meeting times were no longer shown in the Compass, but were posted by the Purser's desk.) We've met some wonderful people during these "happy hours" and it's great to be run into to a support group when you do things around the ship.

I never drink too much on a cruise because it will make me tired and if I do get drunk then I know the next day, I will feel like crap. Don't want to waste a day feeling like that! Why don't you book a short one and try it out? I think you will be able to enjoy yourself and have a great time! ;)
