allthatjazz Posted March 8, 2007 #1 Share Posted March 8, 2007 We'll be traveling to San Juan next February to cruise on AOS, could anyone please advise where to stay for 1 night pre-cruise or not to stay? Your input is greatly appreciated, we're hoping that we made the right choice to cruise out of San Juan, now I am thinking differently. Thanks!;)
Sue L Posted March 8, 2007 #2 Share Posted March 8, 2007 Cruising out of San Juan is wonderful!!!! The island is beautiful and Old San Juan is a great place to stroll around with nice shops and wonderful restaurants. May I ask why you are hesitating ? We stay at the Holiday Inn Express which was clean but really far from everything. What kind of budget are you planning for a hotel. I have heard amazing reviews for El Convento, but it is on the pricey side. There was a thread about SJ hotels just a couple of days ago, so you might want to go to page 2,3,4,5,etc until you locate it.
lmmn Posted March 8, 2007 #3 Share Posted March 8, 2007 You will love your cruise out of San Juan!!! You have lots of time to research. We like the Condado area....I would also highly recommend staying at a 4* or resort. I have stayed at the Wyndham Condado, Caribe Hilton, and the Marriott and have liked them all. Your input is greatly appreciated, we're hoping that we made the right choice to cruise out of San Juan, now I am thinking differently. Thanks!;) Here is a great map of the San Juan area. If you are sailing RCCL, you are probably going out of the Pan American Pier. That is across the water from the Old San Juan Piers. Scroll down under the map to see a lot of interesting information about San Juan, Puerto Rico. ;) http://www.langland.org/cruises/sanjuan.asp I do not know if people realize that when you open this San Juan map, it does not just show you where your pier and the hotels are. If you click on the names of the hotels, it opens to show their websites with all their information such as pictures, prices and such..;) Of course many of the hotels are not listed that are closer to the airport. This website was created by Cruise Critic Clubber. He has done a great job of putting information there for all of us to use..
christygobar Posted March 8, 2007 #5 Share Posted March 8, 2007 I booked the Sheraton OSJ and can't wait to stay there! I'll be there one day ahead of my cruise leaving. It's smack dab in the middle of Old San Juan and is in walking distance - so I have heard :)

Alexis Posted March 8, 2007 #8 Share Posted March 8, 2007 The forts especially, as well as some of the restaurants in OSJ. You picked the perfect location for all of those. I have stayed in the Sheraton a couple of times just for that reason. You might like to look at these maps posted by lv2bcruzin. :lv2bcruzinGreat Puerto Rico Maps With all the questions of what to do and where to go in San Juan I thought I would post this site. Sue L Posted March 9, 2007 #9 Share Posted March 9, 2007 The forts especially, as well as some of the restaurants in OSJ. Right outside the Sheraton, actually same side of the street but opposite corner is the free trolley stop, that will take you to BOTH forts, get on the bus labeled "el morro" and one of the first stops will be San Cristobel and the point where they drop you off is also where they will pick you up. Then you get to El Morro. After you visit there you can walk straight downhill towards OSJ. It is not a bad walk and there are a lot of nice little gift shops and some designer stores on the way. KT32 Posted March 9, 2007 #10 Share Posted March 9, 2007 We stayed at El Convento for 2 nights post-cruise - lovely, but pricey even at off season prices. Pre-cruise we stayed at the Milano. Its basic, but for 1 night if you're on a budget it was fine. The location was great for exploring the old-town and breakfast is included.
Mikensusanl Posted March 9, 2007 #11 Share Posted March 9, 2007 WE have stayed at the Milano in Old San Juan twice now and are happy with the price and the location. It is a little noisy at night, but it is close to many restaurants. You can walk to San Cristobal and El Morro. At night is is fun to go down to the waterfront, seems to be a local thing to do. I am not sure you would want to try to make the walk to the pier where you will be boarding the ship though. It is not something that would be an easy walk with luggage and it isn't as close as it appears. The docks that are right there in Old San Juan by the Sheraton are used more for when the ships are in port for the day, although I think Carnival leaves from the pier there. You can actually see ships go out from ther around El Morro at night, what a sight! We have gone on 4 cruises and 3 cruises had departure from San Juan and have enjoyed them all! Enjoy!!!!! airtita Posted March 9, 2007 #12 Share Posted March 9, 2007 We also stayed at the Sheraton in Old San Juan pre cruise. From what I understand, RCCL AOS goes out of the Pan American Pier which is across the "bay" and not within walking distance. The Sheraton is a bit pricey and the rooms are small but it is clean and it has the "sweet sleeper" beds. It's a great place to stay if you want to explore OSJ.
Buddy140 Posted March 9, 2007 #13 Share Posted March 9, 2007 :) We were on the Empress in February and stayed 2 nights pre-cruise at the Marriott. This hotel was wonderful, great service and location. Sure it was pricey but well worth it. This Marriott has also adopted the North American non-smoking policy. I developed a medical problem after we arrived in San Juan. The front desk arranged for a doctor to come to the hotel and see me in our room. I was very impressed. We have booked the Galaxy for January 2008 and will stay there again.
allthatjazz Posted March 9, 2007 Author #14 Share Posted March 9, 2007 Thanks for all of the input, I think we'll stay with this cruise, I was worried about the location and prices of the hotels in San Juan, but what the heck you're on vacation! Thanks for the maps too, it will be very helpful. :) Sandy
sunlover5 Posted March 9, 2007 #15 Share Posted March 9, 2007 If you are familiar with priceline a good way to go also. We got the Caribe Hilton this past Feb. for 75.00 a night. We got there, they put us in one of their new villas. Gorgeous!!! Our walk out patio was huge with very comfy furniture. Good Luck--also, best cruise ever and we love San Juan. Is this the same Marriott you stayed at? If so, is it all non-smoking now? :) San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino http://marriott.com/hotels/travel/sjupr-san-juan-marriott-resort-and-stellaris-casino/
glitteryone Posted March 9, 2007 #17 Share Posted March 9, 2007 We booked the San Juan Beach Hotel in Condado for the night before our cruise. Any info on this hotel? What is around the hotel to do in the evening? Any restaurant suggestions? Thanks :)
Tex_Jen Posted March 9, 2007 #18 Share Posted March 9, 2007 I just stayed at that Marriott and when I was booking (I used points), the PR hotels had not gone 100% nonsmoking. Only those hotels in North America are completely nonsmoking and PR is not included in that group. Had the best view looking out over the Atlantic. Stayed at the Caribe Hilton prior to the cruise and was put in one of their villas. Had a gorgeous view of Fort San Geronimo. If you can get hotels on Priceline, I suggest looking for resorts to get the better hotels in San Juan for a decent price. Didn't have much luck this time on Priceline, but the Caribe Hilton was offering rooms at a better price than the Hampton Inn and had better amenities.:D Jen
