Beijing suggestions?

We start the Viking China Cultural Delights cruise/tour April 11th. From reading the many posts here (thank you, again!) it sounds like the days in Beijing are filled with activities. We have heard that jade buyers might have the most quality and selection in Beijing. Anyone else have any suggestions about things that are best purchased early in the tour (Beijing), rather than later in Shanghai or Hong Kong? How about things best to do (or eat) in Beijing?
