Anyone left out o NJ port in Jan or Feb?

We are considering a RCCL cruise leaving from New Jersey, its an 11 night, but have always left out of Florida. It will be Jan or Feb, so I guess I am wondering about the weather at sea the first 2 days and coming back.

The first and last seadays will be cold/cool, depending on what's happening in the states. The second sea day may be "pleasant" it's difficult to tell.

Sun/clouds - who knows??? It will probably be winy on the open decks.

We booked a 9 night cruise out of NJ for next January - and we are also concerned about the weather. But we figured the Explorer is such a big ship with so much to do that we will spend the first full day at sea inside having fun, and then enjoy the outside on the next 7 days! And the last day at sea we can hang out inside again. Seems like a small concession since we don't have to pay airfare for 4 people!:)

Last month we left from New York and it was cold the first day, the second day we were in shorts. It was great, I would do it again:D , As night approached the first day you can feel it warming up.

But we figured the Explorer is such a big ship with so much to do that we will spend the first full day at sea inside having fun, and then enjoy the outside on the next 7 days! And the last day at sea we can hang out inside again. Seems like a small concession since we don't have to pay airfare for 4 people!:)

 

Oceanstate, we are from RI too!! This is the first time I've actually communitated from someone in my own back yard!!:)

We also looked at the 9 night for next January too, well depending on what we decide, we may be on the same ship!!

That was the draw with us as well. We'd rather drive 4 hours, get on the ship, go to dinner, and then get cozy with the bedbugs. We usually go to FLA, as well, but then you want to get there a day early, (don't wanna miss the ship), pay for hotel...bla bla...

 

12 Days is longer than we have done, but we are looking forward to it! If you pick December, look us on the Roll Call, and say hello.

We are cruising next Feb. on the Explorer out of NJ. We always take a Jan. or Feb cruise and are always concerned about the weather flying out. Now with RC leaving out of Bayonne in the winter we are very excited. We love the Explorer and have been on it 2x's. We can now take a longer cruise because we do not have to fly out the day before, and worry about flying back home.

We also are a little concerned with the cold the first day but figure 2 ship days give us more time to relax and get into vacation mode! Does any one know do they have more indoor activities the first few days?

We booked a 12 nighter on the Explorer for January. Mostly because of the price and the fact that we didn't need air being from CT. By the second day should be much warmer than the first day.

We are booked in Jan. for 12 nights on the Explorer too.

Unfortunately we have to fly across the country to get there but we will come in days early to enjoy NYC.

 

The price was good and it is nice to get away during one of the cold months.

we all seem to be thinking alike.. avoid the airfare and get extra nights in exchange for leaving in winter. I am curious about the activities they will plan for the first day since they can't rely on pool games. I don't mind starting vacation with lots of naps, reading, etc. and of course the promenade will offer me the opportunity of parting with my $ (casino too I guess). My daughter (18) has wondered what she'll do since she usually goes straight to the pool to get the sun (when we leave from Florida).

We will need to fly earlier to allow for snow delays from our end no matter where we depart during winter months.

It all depends, this year we had a freaky winter with pretty warm temps until the middle of Feb and then winter arrived. We had several ice/snow storms this year and then it wouldn't quit. I don't think the temps went below 10 or so, but worse with the windchill, but then it didn't last long.

Do you think the waves/water will be rougher sailing out of NYC in Jan/Feb? I'm just wondering if it will be a rougher ride than sailing out in the summer.

It most likely will be more rough, but you just never know. My hubby just left to go fishing out of RI, two days ago, and the sea's were 10-15 feet after the Noreaster we had go through, but this winter was unusually mild. It's really a crap shoot, but I'd be prepared for a bumpy day or so. :eek:

 

Don't watch this if you don't want to see a cruise ship in a cyclone! LOL

We are sailing out on 12/14/07 and being a native NYer, it will be cold in NY. (unless the weather is like it was last year)

The midwest is definitely usually colder. We are doing the explorer 2/3/08 and my biggest concern is leaving the car there and having it snow and not being able to find it when we get back!!:eek: I told hubby that we will have to put a bright colored flag on the antenna.

 

We did have one ship, (NCL??) come into New York harbor during a blizzard we had a last year or the year before and the local news showed everyone up on deck having snowball fights on the upper deck. They were actually delayed for about 20 hours or so because they would not allow them into the harbor area because of the snow and the wind.

We're booked for Feb. 08 too. I'll pack my snow shovel in the car! I'd rather have 2 cold days on the ship than a whole week of freezing weather here in NY in the winter. Just need a break during the winters up here. We go in Aug too, this will be our first time in Feb.

Hi Sue, you were nice enough to e-mail me the info on the 5 day Explorer Bermuda you did last year because i'm sailing with my family on it in October, now i see that we are also booked on the same sailing next Feb, way small world i say!

That's to funny. We were on Explorer in Jan. and at the welcome back party the captain was making a joke about winter next year. He said "Can you see it now, snowman lining the decks." Picture the crew with shovels, winter coats, mittens, hats & boots. Come to think of it, those NY merchants/street peddlers better start stocking up, I'm sure the crew will need storm gear.

Winters on the east coast can be very finicky. We are going on Mariner out of FL. in Jan. 08. & staying a little longer after to enjoy the warmth. Will watch and see what happens out of NY/NJ next Jan.?????

We don't have wind chill as in Chicago, but when you are out at sea in 20-30 degree weather it's quite cold, and sometimes we will have a wind chill in single digits. Outdoor activities will not be an option out of Cape Liberty, untill you go further south. We live less than an hour from Cape Liberty, we are considering that cruise, as we would save a lot on airfare. I would probably wear a down or a fur coat onboard for the first day, and the last day at sea.

It is a small world!! Are you on the roll call for the Feb sailing? I am SO confused over there. It is impossible to catch up at this point with over 350+ pages and so many new posts each day. They all seem to know each other also from other cruises it is very intimidating. I am making a valiant effort though!!:rolleyes:

The itinerary is better out of New Jersey with a couple of new ports for us. I’d rather be cold at sea that cold in Chicago!

I’m still on the fence because of the flights. It is one thing to have to worry about weather delays out of O’Hare. I don’t know if I want to have to worry about them in Newark as well.
