Bermuda shorts

Those bermuda short dress suits are being shown for the workplace. Personally, if I could wear it to work and not have anyone gripe, I would think one could wear them to casual night in the dining room on vacation. I think they are more dressy than many types of capris I've seen, too.

This is the problem with interpreting dress codes. We have a dress code at school that says, "No hooded sweatshirts" and every day I have to argue with 12 year olds about what constitutes a hooded shirt and what doesn't. (The answer is a hood, but they don't seem to understand that. LOL)

No shorts, means no shorts period.....

However as a guy on a Bermuda cruise I have purchased formal tuxedo Bermudashorts complete with satin stripe down the legs and buttons for formal suspenders. Along with knee high socks and patent leather shoes, they were deemed not only appropriate, but I was the talk of the diningroom.

Being said, following a cultural tradition such as wearing a kilt with the appropriate accessories is acceptable. Just wearing something for the sake of wearing it and not following through with the complete ensemble would be inappropriate.

Do any of you ladies wear bermuda shorts to dinner with a nice top and a pair of sandals or heels? There is a topic on the RCCL board where a man says his mum was turned away from the dining room because she was wearing shorts. I have 2 nice bermuda shorts planned for dinner, and now I'm worried.

To the OP's original question....No, I would never wear shorts into the dining room for a 5-course dining on any cruiseline. You could wear your bermuda shorts during the day.

I do love the look of the pics that are posted (and I'm over 50), and would wear them for out shopping.

Enjoy your cruise

As someone already pointed out, those pictures showed a far dressier outfit than some capri outfits I've seen. I think that given the right accessories ( heels, blouse, belt, etc...) it could be done for a casual nigght for dinner. Perhaps NOT if you were going to one of the specialty resturants, or to a 5 star dining experience, but casual night? I think so.

I think the outfit in the photo doesn't meet the cruise standards for two reasons. Shorts and jeans are usually prohibited from the main dining room on most cruise lines.

I understand NCL and Carnival have really lowered their dress standards, and that's one of the reasons I choose not to cruise with them.

There are plenty of other alternative eating venues if you want to dress that casual.

The following quote is from the HAL website:

Please note that effective with the May departure dates listed below, the dress code for evenings will change. For cruises prior to the change, the following evening dress code applies.

Evening dress falls into three distinct categories: Casual, Informal and Formal. Comfortable, relaxed clothing is suggested for evenings designated as Casual; however, T-shirts, swimsuits, tank tops and shorts are not allowed in the restaurants or public areas during the evening hours. During Informal nights, dresses or pantsuits for women and jackets (tie optional) for men are standard. On festive Formal evenings, women usually wear cocktail dresses or gowns and men usually wear business suits or tuxedos. There are approximately two formal nights per week. Formalwear for ladies and gentlemen can be pre-ordered for your use during your cruise by calling Cruiseline Formalwear at 800-551-5091. Your formalwear will be in your stateroom when you board.

Holland America Line asks that you observe the suggested dress code throughout the entire evening.

A new evening dress code will take effect with the sailings listed below, as follows:

Evening dress falls into two distinct categories; Formal or Smart Casual. Smart Casual can be defined as slacks and sports shirt or sweater for men and skirt or trousers and sweater or blouse for women. Printed T-shirts, swimsuits, tank tops and shorts are not allowed in the restaurants or public areas during the evening hours. On festive Formal evenings, ladies usually wear a cocktail dress or gown and gentlemen usually wear a suit and tie or tuxedo. There are approximately two formal nights per week. Formalwear for ladies and gentlemen can be pre-ordered for your use during your cruise by calling Cruiseline Formalwear at 800-551-5091. Your formalwear will be in your stateroom when you board.
