all,

My ten year old son is excited about panning for gold during our upcoming alaska cruise. Is this fun for families, even if we don't find much gold? Any good tours that you have experienced to help guide us. We will be in Skagway, Ketchikan and Juneau.

Thanks-karen

I did the gold panning tour in Juneau (with HAL) on my first Alaska cruise. It was very informative and fun, and I still have the little flakes of gold that I found. It's a great excursion for kids.

Where?

As far as I know, all the tourist-oriented gold panning places "guarantee" gold (they salt the pokes). Most make their real money selling you a bezel for $10 to display your gold in, so it behooves them to make sure you get enough gold to want to show off.

As a kid, I remember doing it at Knott's Berry Farm down in SoCal. It was fun for me. I guess my parents were amusing themselves by seeing how happy I was.

Me too! When we lived in So. Cal. we made our yearly trips to Knotts and Disneyland. I had a lot of the "gold" bottles, I thought I was rich!

We stopped at a little place in carcross or caribou crossing for gold panning. They "salt" the gravel with little nuggets, and when the guy saw how excited my 7 yr old was he kept salting, and salting........it was great!

Check out the pics, you'll see DS panning.

Thanks for sharing your beautiful pictures. If you don't mind me asking, what whale watching trip did you take?
