ck53 Posted April 5, 2007 #1 Share Posted April 5, 2007 I just read on another thread that when it is formal night, you get dressed up and stay that way throughout the evening. Have I been making a grevious error? We normally get dressed before dinner, have the picture taken and then head into the dining room, BUT after dinner we go back to the cabin and change into shorts and head to the casino. Are we suppose to stay in our formal attire? Yikes!! Where is Miss Manners when you need her?:) !
Druke I Posted April 5, 2007 #2 Share Posted April 5, 2007 It is done both ways - change or stay dressed -and people are still arguing which is correct. I tend to stay dressed, but I retire early and am lazy.
mr green Posted April 5, 2007 #3 Share Posted April 5, 2007 I like to change after dinner, BUT, some guests have given me a cold soulder, also I am told that the performers in the theaters feel insulted. I compromise. I go to dinner wearing a blazer, and after, I just return to the cabin and remove my blazer and tie. john
sharpie13 Posted April 5, 2007 #4 Share Posted April 5, 2007 My 20 year old son, runs back to the cabin after dinner on formal night and changes back to his shorts as soon as possible. My other son, 17, stays in his Tux all evening. It all just depends. My attitude is that after the all the dressing and primping, I'm going to enjoy it for a while. After all, outside of cruising I may only attend one other formal event a year. Its your cruise, do as you wish.
captainron Posted April 5, 2007 #5 Share Posted April 5, 2007 Hi Everyone, Pleeez, not another thread on formal attire or no formal attire. As our hosts on CC have asked us all in the past, please check that an existing thread has not already been started on the subject matter you wish to discuss before starting yet another. As mentioned, this has been a quarrelous subject since it was introduced more than four + years ago on CC. I'm sure if you read the over 2000 posts on this subject that everyone's questions may already have been answered by others on existing threads elsewhere. Don't get us wrong...it is not the intent to belittle anyone for inquiring. It is merely informative in nature that we advise you of same. To minimize the threads simplifies the time it takes to research a subject. Whether you wear a bowtie with a tux or a T-shirt...happy cruising, and... Ciao for now!!! lake5298 Posted April 5, 2007 #6 Share Posted April 5, 2007 It depends on how much I ate at the formal dinner. If the food was fairly poor, I stay in my dinner suit all night. If the food was good, and I had "seconds", I change straight after dinner into looser trousers! So if the performers are offended by casual dress in the theatre, the chef should be happy...............
Hoyaheel Posted April 5, 2007 #7 Share Posted April 5, 2007 Some cruise lines specify that whatever the dress code is for the evening should be observed the entire evening in all public spaces. I haven't found anything on the Princess site worded that way. I always dress once for the evening, that's it. I've probably already changed a few times that day anyway--who needs another change:rolleyes: This is HAL's wording: Holland America Line asks that you observe the suggested dress code throughout the entire evening. Tina G Posted April 5, 2007 #8 Share Posted April 5, 2007 I'm sure Miss Manners would tell you that the EVENING is formal (although she would say semi-formal by cruise ship standards). Passangers attending evening functions usually stay as they dressed for the EVENING, not just dinner. Do you want to be correct, or do you just want permission to do as you please? happyscot Posted April 5, 2007 #9 Share Posted April 5, 2007 I try to remain in formal dress all night, but find that the bow tie and cummerbund present obstacles to both love-making and sleep. :D
ck53 Posted April 5, 2007 Author #10 Share Posted April 5, 2007 Thanks for the replies! Captain Ron, My actual question was not if formal (we do dress) or non formal dinner clothes (which is what the majority of the search turned up for me) but what to wear AFTER dinner. But thank you for your imput and I will check the search again. TinaG I don't feel I need anyone's permission as how to dress. We always dress for formal nights but we do go to the casino after and I am not sure if this is classified as a "function" We see all attire in there and it tends to be casual. People who do not attend formal night dinner, but go out of their cabins, what are they suppose to wear? I'm not trying to be rude, I am just curious. Thank you for thoughts and I guess it would not be a hardship to stay in our dress clothes!:) Lake 5298 My husband likes the way you think! To all the rest, Thank you and I was not trying to start a dress code war!
GBeret Posted April 5, 2007 #11 Share Posted April 5, 2007 I normally stay in formal clothes, once I have dressed in them for the evening. If some people want to change after dinner, thats their choice. I don't dress formal very often and enjoy doing so on cruises. To each, his/her own choice! :D
Buddy604 Posted April 5, 2007 #12 Share Posted April 5, 2007 On an earlier thread, one poster quoted a letter they received from Princess in reply the poster's complaint about a fellow cruiser wearing a pair of overalls in the dining room on formal night: Following is a direct quote (errors and all) from a letter I received from Princess Passenger Relations today. It was in response to a question regarding the dress code enforcement in the Dining Room on Formal Nights on our recent Island Princess cruise. Now I understand from this that basically there really is NO dress code any longer. I think the people who always ask the blue jean questions will be very happy. "...The dress code aboard our ships is a variable that, although we try to maintain a consistency, is not confined to hard and fast rules. Please be assured, it is never our intention to inconvenience our guests by instituting changes instituted that may affect "onboard protocol." Rather, the dress codes are offered as guidelines for guests to follow the ship's activities schedule for the cruise. Although the dining rooms do enforce the no shorts or bathing attire rules, no passenger would be turned away or made to feel uncomfortable should he/she desire not to adhere to the recommended attire for a specific night. More importantly, our guests are always welcome in any public room, regardless of the ship's suggested dress. We are sorry that you were disappointed as a result of contrary information regarding this practice."
ck53 Posted April 5, 2007 Author #13 Share Posted April 5, 2007 Happy Scot, I agree, the cummerbund might get in the way, but you might look cute in just a bowtie!;) Gberet I think next time , we will do what you do, it is easier! Buddy064 That is an interesting letter! Princess suggests the attire for the evening but they let you dress as you see fit. I can only imagine the overalls! Thank you ! fti Posted April 5, 2007 #16 Share Posted April 5, 2007 I'm sure Miss Manners would tell you that the EVENING is formal (although she would say semi-formal by cruise ship standards). Passangers attending evening functions usually stay as they dressed for the EVENING, not just dinner. Do you want to be correct, or do you just want permission to do as you please? The problem with this reasoning is that those who don't dress formally for dinner may still eat at the buffet. And they should not be excluded from evening activities, which you imply when you said: "Passangers (sic) attending evening functions usually stay as they dressed for the EVENING, not just dinner." So, in the end, it really doesn't matter.
DrTravelBugPhD Posted April 5, 2007 #17 Share Posted April 5, 2007 I can never find a blah blah blah that fits, can you? I was so pissed on my last cruise because someone else had on the EXACT same blah blah blah as I did. Hers made her look fat though.
dorisday Posted April 5, 2007 #18 Share Posted April 5, 2007 when I worked onboard for Princess....I couldnt wait to get out of my formal uniform....seriously constricting & uncomfortable in hot climates. As a passenger, I love to dress up on formal night, long flowing dresses, kitten heels (dont do high heels) & vintage jewellery, have my photo taken & be admired by fellow passengers. Unfortunately, all that breathing in, standing correctly & walking in heels while wearing a beautiful dress wears me out & I cant wait to change into something more comfortable (& practical for ship life)......! Only then can I really start to party......:o

willysgrandma Posted April 6, 2007 #21 Share Posted April 6, 2007 I also go right back to the cabin and get out of the formal clothing as soon as dinner is over. I couldn't care less what anyone else thinks, either - I've done my duty wearing the formal clothing to dinner.
DrivesLikeMario Posted April 6, 2007 #22 Share Posted April 6, 2007 The group I was with on the Diamond last week insisted on changing out of formal clothes after dinner. I felt very out of place, but they had the attitude, "Who cares?" Next time, I'll insist that we stay formally dressed like we have in the past. I didn't appreciate the stares. :(
Casshew Posted April 6, 2007 #23 Share Posted April 6, 2007 When ever I see anyone in stretch pants and a NASCAR teeshirt on formal night, I give them the benefit of the doubt that they looked smashing earlier in their formal wear, but now they have changed. One formal night my daughter wasn't feeling well so we went to the cabin to have an early night. Later I decided to get her some medicine at the shop and forgot it was formal night, I walked off the Elevator and into dozens of beautifully dressed people having cocktails, having formal portraits taken and I got 'the look of distaste' for what I was wearing. I felt like saying 'no really, I am only dressed like this because I'm going for meds and earlier I was soooo dressed up' :D To make it worse I ran into people I knew
play21cw Posted April 6, 2007 #24 Share Posted April 6, 2007 I'll be completely honest.. after one of those "Art Auctions" (free champagne) i usually wear my tux.. I've been known to wear my tux on non formal nights I look at it this way.. i didnt spend 150 bucks on a tux to wear it twice, i want to make sure i get what i paid for.. HAHA Happy Cruising!!! Cruisin' Chick Posted April 6, 2007 #25 Share Posted April 6, 2007 Those who believe that everyone should remain all evening in formal wear and then stare at those who ate in the buffet should get a life. You have the choice. And you shouldn't be forced into activity Siberia just because you didn't dress up.
