Smoking restricions on Azamara

It would be interesting to see how many on here alone (representing a tiny majority of actual cruisers) are cancelling or pending cancelling their cruise due to the smoking restrictions.

Please, no comments from non smokers, we hear you!

Just list here if you are cancelling:

I will start:

3 x suites,(6 persons) Quest Feb 08

If you add up both the cancellations as well as the additional bookings from non-smokers like me who prefer smoke free environments, I expect Azamara to come out on top, as did Oceania.

Furthermore, I don't see your problem. Azamara is assigning designated smoking areas. Why is it so important for you to be able to smoke right in the middle of other passengers who don't appreciate being poisoned by second hand smoke?

Two couples are considering cancelling the Sept 8 Journey cruise. Three of four of us are non-smokers, and applaud the new policy, BUT we are sailing with a beloved family member who does smoke. It seems unreasonable to me that he cannot smoke on the balcony of his cabin. We would never have booked this cruise in the first place if we had known about the smoking policy, out of consideration for this man. He has always been a very considerate smoker and will not light up inside around his grandkids and other non-smokers. It seems hard that a cruise carefully selected for the four of us in celebration of a family event will now have to be re-considered.

In future I will most definitely choose to cruise Azamara, because I like the smoking restrictions, but only for cruises when we are not sailing companions or family members who are smokers.

I just think this topic clearly states why Cruise Lines but also restaurants, airports, etc. decide to make their facilities smoke free. Just because the majority of the smokers only thinks about themselves and their addiction.

I honestly think that Azamara is not interested in those not booking or those canceling, but in those who sail and enjoy. And for the smokers........choose for another cruiseline that allows smoking.......plenty out there !

But as an occasional ( considerate ) smoker , I don't even smoke in my own home I go outside.

I do enjoy smoking in the casinos once in a while, or out on the deck.....even on a veranda occasionally....

My vacation doesn't revolve around smoking, so if I have to go to the aft of the ship...which withthe size of it will take two minutes from any room...It won't bother me, keep me from booking a cruise, or cancel any of my upcoming X cruises.

Personally I think if someone has the attitude that the HAVE to smoke because its their right..and want to cancel, so be it. I wouldn't want to be on a ship with passengers like that.

Just remember there are a couple of smoking areas, and you can smoke while in the ports....Its not really that bad. As for the new verandas, they are all enclosed. That could be the reason why they are now disallowing smoking on them.

So smoking areas are limited...doesn't diminish my cruise. It might make me enjoy it more.

GAV BOY: "Its time the Majority won and not the minority, thats democracy ! :)"

You are actually wrong. Democracy is the right to be a part of the process and have your voice heard. Its NOT about winning and losing, or the minority or majority.

So, people are mad that a company has passed a policy prohibiting them from fumigating public rooms with deadly, cancer-causing toxins?

No one is telling anyone that they cannot smoke – simply telling them that they cannot do it in public areas where they subject others to potential bodily harm and long-term consequences most of us would prefer to do without.

Let’s all get something straight – “Democracy” does mean representing the majority view while protecting the rights of the minority, but nowhere does that include allowing the minority an alleged “right” to cause physical harm to others.

And, to the previous poster, you are correct. Democracy is about having your voice heard....even when the OP has attempted to censor a thread to only those who agree with his/her viewpoint.

Yes nice post ! :D

Not sure why Dave agrees ?

We are canceling an RS (7004) on the March 29 Quest cruise. The reason is the smoking restrictions but not the public areas, we can deal with that. We could even deal with not smoking on the verandah, we rarely do that so no big deal. What is causing us to cancel is that we won't be able to smoke in the privacy of our own cabin.

I do not think the OP is tring to censor a thread. The OP asked a very specific question of a particular group of CC members. Most of the replies here not addressed the original question at all. Rather it has become a debate by non-smokers pushing their agenda on the OP.

I know this is an open board, but why can't we just let the OP get the answer to the question originally asked?

And before you ask, I am not a smoker and will enjoy my Quest sailing in November with the new Azamara policies such as no formal nights, open seating and yes, designated smoking areas.

That said, I do not assume that everyone will be happy with this turn of events and think that those on the Journey sailings in the next month or so, do not have a choice since Celebrity did not disclose this change in advance. The rest of us can choose to cancel if we feel stongly about ANY of the Azamara policies.

Respectfully - Carol

I thought about it.. and no. Not cancelling. I sailed REN with no smoking.. and survived. I sailed Oceania with limited smoking... and survived. So 'll be on the Journey August 18th.

We are not cancelling, we are just NOT going to book. Will book elsewhere.

Ditto for the four of us. Its not a matter of being argumentative , but rather just a sigh of relief that we found out just in the nick of time before booking. I feel so for those who got to the ship and then found out. It would be somewhat like finding out that there was no water on the ship except in the two places stated.

For us, it would be fine if smoking was limited to our cabins only, as that is where it has always been done (or in the smoking rooms) in order to not offend anyone on the ship who has a physical or other problem with cigarette smoke. It could be off-limits everywhere else and the 3/4s of us that smoke would be OK about it. I am the one who does not smoke in our foursome, by the way.

I do think it is fine for the cruise line to set aside a couple of ships for those who would prefer the very limited smoking provisions, but it is the timing of the announcement that was peculiar.

I hope those smokers on this sailing have brought nice PJs to show under the ship bathrobes when they go for that 1st and last cigarette and cup of coffee for the day in those public areas.

Bon Voyage to all! Have a great time on this lovely "new" ship.

It isn't really the 'privacy of your own cabin'..... on several cruises we have had smokers next to us or below us and the cigarette/cigar smoking is very strong on our balcony.

Why should the non-smokers have to deal with that. The smell is not even pleasant. Why should my balcony experience be valued less then yours?

BRAVO Azamara!!

Again, when I say cabin I mean cabin....like inside with the door closed....not on the verandah. But Azamara made their choice and so be it. I'm not going to go out and eat worms and broken glass over this. :) We canceled our Quest cruise and have picked another vacation for next year. Are we angry? Not particularly, just a little disappointed but, again, that's the policy on Azamara and it doesn't fit us so that's the way it is.

Being miserable because you can't smoke in your cabin, IMO, is simply rediculous! You are right though, some posters did get carried away with their comments.. Including yours highlighted in red! It goes both ways!

Wherever you decide to cruise, I hope you have a wonderful time and hope that you are catered to! Happy cruising smoking or not! :D

This is what i don,t understand Its not being banned completely (yet) only in certain area,s !

What,s the Big Deal ?

Bth DW (who is disabled, and uses an electric wheelchair) and I, are smokers. We sailed Zenith in Feb 07, with their "designated areas" policy. Not a problem, because we could smoke in our cabin, and on the port side.

We love Celebrity, and were planning a late fall cruise on the Journey. We will NOT be booking based solely on this policy change with Azamara.

It's not that easy (nor practical), to be in lounging dress and have to crank up Ol' Sparky (the e-chair), and go to a "designated area". It should be a great luxury to simply go to the veranda and enjoy a smoke.

It's a vacation. It's part of how we relax. I don't drink beer, and I don't particularly enjoy sitting amongst a bunch of folks who do, and have it spilt on me, the table, and the soon-to-be-sticky floor. But...I tolerate, because it's their fun, and their vacation, too.

Yeah, we could quit smoking. You could quit drinking, too. Poluting the air...outside? Hah! Inside...I agree with all non-smokers about restaurants and other public closed areas (except around well-ventilated bars).

Two CC-class cruiser here, who, together with 3 grown children will NOT use Azamara.

On topic?

I haven't had booze spilt on me since I've been out of my twenties. Maybe you need more graceful friends?;)

Hi Everyone !

As this thread has turned into another smoking debate, I am shutting down this thread. This way, I will only have to keep a close eye on 1 thread, and not 2.

Please.... everyone, try to use your best judgement when posting, especially on a hot topic like this. If it gets out of control, you will leave me NO choice but to shut down that thread too. Believe me, I do not want to do this, but some of the posts that were deleted here, were way out of line.

This thread is now closed. Let's all work together. Thanks !
