shereemcg Posted April 12, 2004 #26 Share Posted April 12, 2004 we'll be there Monday Aug 23rd!!! We rented a full size car, didn't seem to be much of a price difference. sounds like it will be a nice trip. Sheree
Yukon Posted April 13, 2004 #27 Share Posted April 13, 2004 I always go for the comfort of a bigger car - and the safety when you're in an area where there's a lot of pickup trucks! Murray
Sandy R Posted April 13, 2004 Author #28 Share Posted April 13, 2004 Thanks Murray... we figured there'd be lots of pick-up trucks because of the weather and terrain. So, a full size car it will be! Shereemcg... so you'll be there a day before us. We'll be on the Diamond Princess. What ship will you be sailing on? I gather all the Alaska ports get lots of cruise ships in summer. I hope it will be warm the end of August... at the very least no rain! Sandy R
bonsai1 Posted April 13, 2004 #29 Share Posted April 13, 2004 We ended up with the compact which I think was $65 w/Avis. What is the mid- size? We'll be there on Wed., Aug 25 on the Island Princess.
SFDave Posted April 13, 2004 #30 Share Posted April 13, 2004 Hi, Can anyone advise if 6 hrs (~2-8pm) is sufficient to drive RT btw. Skagway & Emerald Lake? Our "problem" is that we can't get started on this drive until about 2pm(1:30 at earliest) due to being on tour in the morning. If we're selective about which stops we make along the way, can we make it back to Skagway by say, 7:30-8pm? Our ship departs at 9pm & I don't want to cut it too close. Btw, we arrive 5/22(7am-9pm) on the Mercury. I already have our car reserved from Avis. Thanks for any tips or advice. Dave
Budget Queen Posted April 13, 2004 #31 Share Posted April 13, 2004 Dave- should be plenty of time for the drive. 150 miles round trip and time for stops.
SFDave Posted April 13, 2004 #32 Share Posted April 13, 2004 Budget Queen, thanks for your response. As we make our way to Carcross & E Lake, could you advise which stops are generally regarded as highlights for this route (or your personal favorites)? Thanks again, Dave
shereemcg Posted April 13, 2004 #33 Share Posted April 13, 2004 Sandy: we're on the summit southbound. Haven't found a soul on that ship!! Friends are on the Mercury and we're in port with them each time! Sheree
Sandy R Posted April 13, 2004 Author #34 Share Posted April 13, 2004 SFDave... I think the site below is what you're looking for. Once you've logged on, click Klondike Highway 2. It mentions sights by mileposts. I ran it off and will take it with us to Skagway. http://www.bellsalaska.com/myalaska/klondikehwy2.html Sandy
DixieGrannie Posted April 13, 2004 #35 Share Posted April 13, 2004 Yukon or Budget Queen Do you know anything about P.B. Cruisers? Avis is not open the week that we arrive in Skagway, May 10. We are thinking of renting from P.B. Cruisers and driving to Emerald Lake, having cinnamon buns, stopping for lunch, and taking tons of photos along the way. It was this or Experience the Yukon. We will have lots more freedom having the car; can eat where we choose and stop whenever we like. Thanks for any input either of you might have. Brenda NORTH TO ALASKA, GO NORTH, THE RUSH IS ON. Yukon Posted April 14, 2004 #36 Share Posted April 14, 2004 PB Cruisers is a reliable company with good vehicles - you'll have no problems with them. Murray
Budget Queen Posted April 14, 2004 #37 Share Posted April 14, 2004 Yep PB cruisers are OK, sometimes older cars. Also look and see if Sourdough is open??
DixieGrannie Posted April 14, 2004 #38 Share Posted April 14, 2004 YUKON or BudgetQUEEN Do either of you know where the Sourdough Rental office is in relationship to where Mercury will be docked? I think I'd rather rent from Sourdough. Thanx, Brenda SOON Now....Very Soon ;-}
Rondo Posted April 15, 2004 #39 Share Posted April 15, 2004 We just reserved a van from Sourdough for June and I have map of Skagway and it looks like it's about 5 or 6 blocks right off Broadway. I see two docks, Ore Dock and Broadway Dock. There is always a short walk on the pier before hitting the town streets, but 6 blocks shouldn't take long to walk. Ore Dock would be a little further away than Broadway, but doesn't look like much more than a block. I must have requested the city map-attraction guide from www.skagwayinfo.com. That is the web address on the front cover. It's a nice little info book. Yukon Posted April 15, 2004 #40 Share Posted April 15, 2004 All 3 rental places are within a block of each other. I see you'll be at the far end of the Railroad Dock, which would make it a little over half a mile, but there are lots of shuttles (I think they're still $1). DixieGrannie Posted April 15, 2004 #41 Share Posted April 15, 2004 Thanx Walking is no problem. Hubby and I walk 2-3 miles every night. Just got back from 2mile walk Thanx for the info. They had emailed me today but did not tell me where they were located. I wanted to go ahead and reply to them and reserve the car(if I knew the location). This seals the deal for us. Rental car/Emerald Lake!! bunnybear Posted April 15, 2004 #42 Share Posted April 15, 2004 I am in agreement with many of this string- we are going to rent a car and tour the area. Yukon - please provide a list of "what not to miss" and in what order we should take this road trip. mooshele Posted April 15, 2004 #43 Share Posted April 15, 2004 Hi Bunnybear - take another look at the thread above and you will see a link to a website I posted which has the entire route from Skagway to beyond Emerald Lake mapped out by mile post (km in the Yukon). Very detailed and something you will want to have in the car with you! Budget Queen Posted April 16, 2004 #44 Share Posted April 16, 2004 The downtown shuttle was $1.50 each way last Sept. If needed. All flat walking but if the 3rd ship back on the Railroad dock- it is a haul. DixieGrannie Posted April 16, 2004 #45 Share Posted April 16, 2004 THANKS to you all for the good info. We now have a rental car and I've ordered a book that should arrive soon. Yukon Posted April 16, 2004 #46 Share Posted April 16, 2004 mooshele - don't take that BellsAlaska guide that you posted as gospel. There are a few mistakes that could cause problems - poor descriptions such as the fact that there are no toilets at Bove Island, wrong business and location names, missing attractions, etc. Murray
mooshele Posted April 16, 2004 #47 Share Posted April 16, 2004 Thanks Yukon I guess it is better than nothing and gave us a good idea of what we would be seeing (helped make decision to rent a car!) but is there something you could suggest that might be more accurate which I could get online or find in a book?!? I'm pretty good with direction (plus it is only one road ) and I have a pretty good 'nose' for finding things and off the track sights (at least it was working in CA, AZ and CO!!) but would hate to miss a 'must-see' especially since we only have one day!!! Yukon Posted April 16, 2004 #48 Share Posted April 16, 2004 After seeing how many mistakes there are in the Bell's guide (the printed version doesn't even mention Carcross!), I decided that it's time to upgrade my own. I'm working on it right now, but the majority of it is done (it will be finished completely tomorrow) - http://www.explorenorth.com/library/roads/sklondike-photos1.html Rather than an annotated photo album, it's now set up as a mile-by-mile guide, with photos and links to other information for those who really want to go in depth.
