I disembarked the Sovereign yesterday at 7:15AM at Port Canaveral, and thought I'd try to call Avis early, realizing they don't open til 7:30AM. I called and it went to a recording. I tried again, several times after 7:30AM and it still went to a recording. Art's Shuttle was there and asked me who I was waiting for and offered to call. (They had several vans waiting and ready to pick up passengers.) Hertz asked who I was waiting for and offered to give me a ride--and I let him (gave him a better tip than I would have generally given). Budget was also at the port by about 7:20AM. When dropped at Avis, they seemed a little offended I had taken the Hertz bus. Didn't really apologize for not being there, or for not answering the phone. Also didn't have the front door to the business unlocked yet when I left to get to the rental car. Hertz guy told Avis guy that he should thank him for giving me the ride and not stealing the customer--as he would have matched price. Didn't seem to matter to Avis. Ten minutes later, I think Avis finally left for the port, although customers calling in were told he was on his way. I was on the road shortly after 8 and at the airport shortly after 9--which was plenty of time for an 11:30 flight. I'll probably think twice when I rent again, if price is comparable. Too bad this is the only experience I've had with them--not good when I need to make a judgement call on a rental car company there next time. Some times, first impressions really do matter.

Just as an update, enterprise does have a shuttle to the port of miami, you can pick up from from fort lauderdale, or west palm beach,and drop it off at MIA with no additional charge and they have a shuttle that will take you to the seaport. When I was getting off the ship to 2 shuttles I saw picking up people were dollar/thrifty and alamo/national I guess they also have no additional charges for dropping off at MIA. Both of these shuttles were running like every 1/2 hours it seemed. Enterprise doesn't do port of miami pick ups.

Using the Hertz code listed above, I can get a Ford Taurus (or similar) for $59 with the free shuttle to the port.

 

I'm going to check my Entertainment book to see if their code does any better but this seems like the way to go.

I'm doing a back to back (with a night in between) cruise at FLL. I'd like to get a car when I get off my Carnival ship, keep it overnight and return it to get on my Holland Am ship. Can someone tell me what is the earliest I can come back to HAL, so I don't get charged an extra day, and how does this work..I assume I would not return it to the port..and I assume I'll be picked up at the port and shuttled somewhere to get the car.

You haven't mentioned Enterprise.

 

We are picking up a car at the Miami airport the day before our cruise and leaving it at our hotel, the Hyatt on the day of our cruise. We specifically booked Enterprise because the had a desk at the hotel and we wouldn't have to go back to the airport to drop off the car.

I know it is a typical plan. That is why I am doing this. However, the poster above made it seem like there wasn't an AVIS shuttle from the airport to the port. I want to make sure or else I will change my reservation to the other location and plan on taking a cab to the port.

I called the Avis office that was named (M6I) and asked specifically if they had a shuttle from their office to the Port after I dropped off my car. They told me no, but I could take a cab and it was around $7-10. I figured that the amount I was saving at Avis (about $3) was not worth it and I was better off going to Hertz, paying the $59 and having the shuttle take me (or DH, if he drops us at the port first) back to the ship.

 

If you want to double check, I'd say call them directly. You can find their number when you go through the reservation process on their website...it gives you the location of the office and it's direct dial. If you get different information, please let us know because I'm always up for saving a couple of dollars.

 

ETA: Just called the M6I location again (Friday, 7/6 at 11 AM Eastern time) and was told they were the closest Avis location to the port and that THEY DID NOT OFFER A SHUTTLE TO THE PORT. So you might want to take that into account when making your reservation.

Then just to be safe, I'd call the MIA airport location to confirm that they have a shuttle from the airport to the port so that you're not surprised when you drop the car off and when you get off the ship.

 

I booked a ressie with Hertz since we are coming in the night before and I want to be able to get some last minute things before going to the ship. I'll also check out rates for National (I'm an EI member) to see if picking up at FLL and dropping off at MIA and then taking a shuttle (if offered) is a better option. Not sure if they have a shuttle from the airport to the port (or if they do, if it's free).

I called Hertz this morning. They have a shuttle from the Port of Miami to their location under a mile away. They did say it can take the 30 minutes what with delays, but the guy also told me that if you didn't want to wait you could take a taxi and they would reimburse you up to $15! Can't beat that!
