We will be sailing on 11/1, first time on Carnival, have been on Holland America and RCL in the past, Have heard mixed reviews of Carnival, but we figured the only way to really find out is to go. We will be taking the kids 10&13 this time so we thought this would be a "fun" ship

I just got back from this itinerary and loved it! What a way to start off the cruise with HMC and end it with Grand Turk! At Grand Turk we did the cotton cay snorkeling excursion and it took us to see the "shelf" that is there. That was one of the most incredible things I have ever seen. (I am not sure that was "Cotton Cay" so maybe the place they take you would change but we loved it!)

They were building what appeared to be some type of water slide at the pool at Grand Turk. Nothing really big or fancy like at a water park but if that is what it was it will add a new dimension to the fun there.

FloridaGram -- We're still trying to figure out what to do in Grand Turk but we know we want to snorkel. The excursion you mention sounds awesome, but would you go into more detail into what you saw? Is the shelf the 7,000 ft. drop? I cannot wait! Thank you!

I'll be on the same cruise with my best friend. November can't get here fast enough. I'm a little anxious about having three days at sea... i hope there are enough activities to keep up busy. We're on the spa deck - which is supposed to be fairly quiet.

We only do a balcony, that being said, I would not do an aft again. It's kinda of riding in an old station wagon when the back seat faced the rear. Did it twice and yes, depending on wind, the smell of deisel and what ever is cooking upstairs is smellable. We got the afts when we took a garentee, I guess they are the less taken. We are not prone to motion sickness but I remember the smell of greasy bacon soooooo early in the morning.

We were on the Liberty last year with our 3 teens (13, 14 & 15) and they had a blast. It was during summer vacation and there were literally 100's of kids on the ship. At the beginning of November there probably won't be as many kids. Make sure they go to the Camp Carnival Meet & Greet the first night. This way they can meet the other kids on board.

The Liberty is a beautiful ship. My DH and I also had a great time on her last year.

The boat we were on anchored right in front of the "Shelf." When we got off in the front of the boat you were snorkeling in somewhat shallow water with alot of coral. Young men with lots of breath power were able to hold their breath and touch the bottom there, but you would not reach it without going under water so it is not too shallow. Then all of a sudden the water gets very dark and you can't see the bottom because it is so deep. It was a neat experience, I did not stay in the deep water too long, it was just an eery feeling for me. I had not experience that ever before in about 8 snorkeling trips, usually the water is about the same depth where I have been.

Others may disagree but I heard that there is not much on Grand Turk Island. There are only 3700 people who live there so think about the amenities that are not there that a bigger island would have. Someone I know took the island tour and they were disappointed because mostly all they saw were depressing things because the people are so poor.

Shopping is available when you get off the ship and that part of it was very nice. There is the pool but it will be very crowded and it will be hard to get a chair by the pool unless you are off the ship early. The water at the beach is slightly rocky so water shoes would be good for those with sensitive feet. There should be enough chairs on the beach.

Enjoy your cruise!

The Lido deck is one deck above so they are referring to the buffet restaurant. I never noticed that smell in the restaurant or on the deck at the aft pool so I am surprised to hear someone complain about that smell.

I felt the same way you did before our cruise on May 31 this year. We have last sailed Carnival in 99 and have been on RCCL once, HAL 3 times, and Disney once since then. I was not sorry we chose CCL. We had alot of fun, there were so many choices of things to do we could not do everything we would have wanted.

The ship is beautiful, I was especially fond of the decorated hallways, they actually captured my attention and I remember the other hallways must have been just plain for me to have noticed the difference in these.

I have learned that there are people who can find something wrong with anything. And some that you cannot please no matter what you do. Unless you read negative reviews form the majority of the people I would take any cruise that fits your needs. We just make the best of whatever there is. What's not to like about getting clean towels twice a day, having your bed made and turned down every day, 3 meals served to you a day if you want it, and as many activities or peace and quiet as you want?

We just got back from the beach and it was hassle to have to get ready and drive to a restaurant, maybe wait to be seated, and wait longer for your food and then have to fork over at least $60 plus tip for the amount of food you get on a cruise. (Appetizer, meal and dessert for 2) And I don't know about you, but service in restaurants is not what it used to be in my town. So any minor imperfections on a cruise are nothing compared to what it could be in a land based restaurant.

I love cruising!

Thanks for the info! I had mentioned the "shelf" to my DH and he said if he wasn't at the top of the food chain.... well, it sounds like we might do a snorkeling excursion here (just maybe not this one). Thanks!

  • 2 weeks later...

My question is what stuff is in the bathroom. And before you HA HA me, I mean shampoo, conditioner, liquid soap.

It been a while since cruise w/Carnival and I remember that at times we had samples of stuffs. With all the air rules of liquids, I hate to use valuable space and weight for stuff already there.

I read somewhere it is a shampoo/conditioner mix (think "Pert") and there was soap in a dispenser on the wall. (Got it from someone on the boards here).

Hi everyone!

The liberty was awesome! What a beautiful ship! Lots of fun things to do. Check some of these things out:

-All of the shows-I saw most of them and they were all pretty darn good.

-Victoria Lounge is a fun hang out place

-Mini-Golf on a non-windy day is a blast

-Marriage game, karaoke, hairy chest comp., photo scavenger hunt were some of the funniest events

-Eating in the Golden Olympian next to the window was one of the best experiences (try the Chocolate Melting Cake!!!!!!!!!!)

-The hot tub in the spa...barely anyone goes there!!

Port wise:

-HALF MOON CAY: The BEST port. Absolutely beautiful beach. You truly feel you are in paradise.

-ST. THOMAS: Fun shopping areas. MUST DO: HELMET DIVE AT CORAL WORLD. Tons of fun and just a very neat experience. Plus, after you pay for the HD, you have free access to Coral World. We went to Koki Beach...I wasn't that impressed. There was a crazy woman screaming at the people on the beach that kind of ruined it for us.

-SAN JUAN: The forts are fun to check out. NOTE: Do not buy the tour of San Juan excursion...once you walk off the pier, people will offer you it for 20 bucks. We kept walking and someone offered it to us for 10 bucks and it was a nice tour.

-GRAND TURK: Beautiful beach!! Margaritaville is a blast. Fun pool area and great food/music. NOTE: Bring water shoes to the beach. The water is filled with rocks.

Extra tidbits:

-Piano Bar was not as popular as people say it was. I guess the Liberty's Piano Bar is lacking.

-Disco was never really crowded.

-Movie screen on the Lido deck is awesome!!

-Seeing a storm out at sea at night is an incredible experience.

-Our waiters Iwayan and Alvaro were excellent

If you have any questions about anything, let me know!! Have a blast...I loved this ship and this experience.

Thank you for all this information--this up-and-coming, 1st-time cruiser appreciates it!

I didn't know you could go in the spa and USE the hot tub! I would love that and I'm sure my hubby would, too!

Thanks for this tip--again, it's appreciated.

I was interested to hear the piano bar was not crowded. We were on the ship the first week of June and it was the last week for the guy in the piano bar. So, this makes me wonder if the new guy is not as good? It was always pretty crowded when we were there. I did not like it so we did not stay long on the 2 times we went. The guy was always asking for money to play a song, and lots of money and for people to buy him drinks. If someone gave him a $5 he was always trying to get someone to give him more. I am not sure if that was because it was his last week or if it is always that way. I prefer to tip when someone is good and not be badgered into paying for a service that someone is getting paid by the cruise line to perform.

I think there was a new guy and he was definitely not that entertaining. We hopped in to listen and there were two other couples in there. Instead of playing some fun, vibrant music to attract a crowd, he was like, "Well, since no one is really here I'll just play some classical music."

NOTE FOR ALL CARNIVAL LIBERTY CRUISERS: The best piano entertainment was outside of the casino. The piano player attracted a huge crowd and dressed up for different songs.

I agree. We spent most nights going between him and the duo in the atrium lounge. They do older, easy listening songs and it is much more quiet in that lounge. They were a few couples that could dance very well that we enjoyed watching in that lounge.

I have to say that our time on the Liberty was surprisingly enjoyable. We have heard so much about Carnivals demographics and had not sailed them in 9 years but the Liberty was a great ship. It is big enough and has enough choices of things to do that you can do what you like and stay away from anything you don't like.

Off the Liberty last week 8 day to Panama, great cruise great ship. The Duo in the Atruim lounge are great. We had our kids 20 + 23 we all had a great time. The shows were good. The cruise director is James with his sidekick Alfie. Food was great esp. the deli Rubens, also tried the Mongolian grill it was also good. OK We like to eat all the food was good. The "cover band" Music Society was good. Look for them in the Victorian Lounge its above the silver dining room. Some good entertainment there with small crowds. I could go on and on. We kept copies of the Capers. Ready to go again.

Music society?? Were they from the Phillipines??? We LOVED Music Asia on the Fascination, they did alot of AC/DC,Skynrd,etc. We didn't like Music Manila so much on the Triumph, which was a big disappointment.

Was music society really good???

well, as a professional piano bar player, i can tell you, that every rock n roll piano bar runs this way. people "request" their songs, and if one person outbids another, then their song gets played instead. the people who only "suggest" songs have to wait their turn, if one comes at all...

and as for money, the cruise line pays only a small stipend, the rest of the piano players income comes from...you guessed it...you.
