side trips from St Petersburg

I really don't need another 3 days in St Petersburg this summer...any suggestions for overnights from there to somewhere else interesting?? Thanx for any input.

You can always go to Moscow for a couple of days!

It seems to me that I read on one of CC board postings that if you do not go with an "official" guide, you have to have a Visa.

I thought about flying to Moscow but was advised against it by a Russian tour agent. The train takes overnight and I don't think that sounds like a good idea...so looking for other options and suggestions. Thanx everyone.

We will fly from St. Petersburg, spend the night at the Savoy Hotel in Moscow, and return the next day.
