Prepay tip question

Recommended Posts

Ummm . . . but "you are on my list" could very well just mean that you are on her list of passengers that she is responsible for, so that if you prepaid, they would get directed appropriately. That response doesn't sound like proof that she knew you had already prepaid the standard tip.

They know. I specifically asked our waiter about this on my AOS cruise out of San Juan to make sure he was being taken care of. He said he had already seen on his list that we had pre-paid and that it was taken care of. I gave him a little extra anyway because he was very good, and knowing about this admin fee, I'm glad I did, but yes, they do know.

I was specifically asking her how to ensure that my pre-paid tip would find its way to *her*, my new server. So, when she said "you are on my list, thank you very much, Miss Tracy", it was an indication that they had reassigned the tip appropriately.

And, having a friend who works on a RCI ship, I can assure you that they get 100% of the tips allocated to them. No fee is taken out. This includes any amount you write in additional on any checks (ie: bar tabs) as well.

Tracy, I'm really glad to hear this. The information I got from the crew member that told us about the administration fees was when the tipping first changed a few years ago to where you could add it onto your shipboard account. Glad they have changed it to the way it SHOULD be! Thanks!

I have paid cash & prepaid on the ship. Friends who were with us in Nov. prepaid when booking. They never got vouchers, went to the pursers desk to question it. They said they had no record. That is the reason I will only pay on the ship.

OK. From other comments I've seen, sounds like you're right. I just thought maybe they had a list of the passengers assigned to them, whether they prepaid tips or not, in which case, "you're on my list" could have meant that you had, indeed, been reassigned to her list of passengers.

Sounds like that do know who prepaid, though, which I find rather odd. There is really no need for them to know that. Why does a waiter or cabin steward need to know whether you're prepaying tips up front or paying them at the end?

 Now that would be a hassle!

You're welcome, LJ.

As to knowing about prepaid tippers, Alcheme....I guess I don't see what real difference it makes. I've always received fantastic service. Since I found myself always paying standard tips and then some, why not just pay for it as part of the cruise? So, that's what I do now.

Haven't seen a difference in service one way or another no matter which way I've done it. In fact, I always end up adding even more cash to the envelopes, as they always earn it! :)

Yeah. I don't think it should make any difference. It just struck me as odd. What is the point in giving the service staff a list of who has prepaid tips ???

Well, there are some folks on here who believe that the only way they get excellent service is to tip their servers and room stewards up front. Maybe the list serves to assist those who only give their best when they know they are getting a tip.:D (Frankly I believe that the majority of the staff strive to provide excellent service because they take pride in their work and NOT because they are motivated only by the tip that they will receive)

My TA ran a special when I booked with them to get paid tips for our next cruise on EOS in March 08. I thought that was a great special. I think it was something like $10 per passenger per day. I am going to assume it will show up on my sail pass account as an OBC. Has anyone ever had this type of special and was that how it worked?

I have always paid in cash in the envelopes they provide you with at the end of the cruise. I usually reserve judgement about tipping the head waiter. If I never see him i don't tip him. I usually round up all the other tips, room, waiter and assist waiter. I have never found a valid reason not to tip these three people all that is suggested, they have always been wonderful. The head waiter sometimes makes rounds and asks if everything is ok. If he makes himself visable i tip him as well.

I have always paid the tips in advance and then given extra cash along with the vouchers to people who have given exceptional service.

I have never had any problems with this apart from my recent cruise on the Voyager when the only time the head waitress turned up was to collect her tips on the last night! I was amazed at the cheek of her but nevertheless hand over my envelope containing the voucher

I have prepaid the tips also on my last couple of cruises...It is very convenient...but for those of you who want to pay with cash but don't want to carry it, your other option is to get cash from the casino on your seapass.........I get cash from the casino whenever I need it for items that I buy on the islands....I have never had a problem getting cash from the casino...then I don't have to carry any with me other then singles and some fives for the baggage guys...................
