We have booked the Pirate Cruise excursion in Barbados and it does not leave until 12:30. Is there shopping at the Pier? What is close? Anything special to look for on this island to buy?

Thanks much!!

:)

There is a terminal that you have to walk through to get out of the port area that is full of neat little shops of all kinds. There is also a straw market right outside of it. The downtown area is not too far - maybe a fifteen minute walk or a cab ride of a few dollars. We are mainly the "cheap souvenier" type shoppers, so the shops in the terminal were ok for us.

Hi, did anyone happen to notice if there were curb cutouts or level streets for a wheelchair? Hubby is in a power chair and we would like to at least get off the ship and go shopping. Thanks,

They were working on the pier area 2 weeks ago. Pouring new concrete and such. It should be possible for your hubby to get out and about there. Barbados has a long pier and much will depend on how many ships are in port with you as to where you dock and how many obstacles that you may have to address to get to the terminal......

Barbados is reasonably "up" on this.

There's a local Disabled Assoc. who nags and nags about wheelchair accessibility

and it's starting to have real effect these last 5 years or so.

Yes, many of our sidewalks have wheelchair slopes/curb cutouts,

and many car parks have extra-wide Disabled Parking slots close to the doors of the bldgs..

and these are well-respected by local drivers.

Not that I'm praising-up Barbados,

but I should think that we have better conditions in this respect

than several nearby islands

(but really I hope I'm wrong!)

With close to three hundred thousand people on the island at any given time

looking for skinny Michael the taxi driver (if he gave you his right name)

would be ahh..."something of a challenge"!

I'd love to help but don't think I can,sorry.

Ask me about locations, beaches and stuff I can photograph for you,

I can be a lot more helpful in that 'direction'.

Judging from your description of where you first found him,

he sounds like one of the privileged few taxi drivers allowed into the Port itself,

where ordinary folk like me are not permitted

- not without real,legitimate reason.

Sarah of Glory Tours probably has clearance to get into the Port

she may even know this man

maybe she can do the honours, but she's a busy lady!

We have booked the Barbados Beach Carnival thru the ship. I can't find any information on this other than what Carnival has. Do you know anything about this. Appreciate any and all information you might have.

Thank You

Sorry never heard of it, but..

"Kick off your shoes and party on the beach

at Barbados’ famous Beach Carnival!"

the blurb says, at the Carnival website.

It sounds and looks to be kinda touristy,

- you'll have a good time anyway!

How famous it is I'm not sure,

but see a comment by pholter

over at

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=340761

where he mentions 'fire-dancers'

...presumably fire-eaters,

and limbo dancing under a very low bar, set aflame(the usual)

......................

Also see the single shot shown on page

http://www.lexingtonmojo.com/channels/Gallery.cfm?GCID=10

showing a 'tumbler' dressed as a Green Monkey

being thrown into the air? by a couple of guys doing their stilt-walker thing!

Looks interesting!

Please help...

It is our first visit to Barbados, we will be arriving on Monday, 10/22 for the day. As a first timer here, we'd love to spend some time on a nice beach, with chairs and maybe tour some interesting places to see or shop..

Any help is very much appreciated..

Thanks in advance for your recommendations
