snorkelman Posted June 12, 2007 #1 Share Posted June 12, 2007 I am interested in buying a man's panama hat (Fedora hat). I can buy the nice ones (suc as in these pictures) http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.mycubanstore.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/2078.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.mycubanstore.com/page/MC/PROD/ny2078&h=499&w=350&sz=28&hl=en&start=11&um=1&tbnid=hM_rvSj9O99_UM:&tbnh=130&tbnw=91&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dclassic%2Bpanama%2Bhat%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.nauticalia.com/res/heros/94381.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.nauticalia.com/uk-info/clothing/accessories/panama_hat/94381__56.html&h=168&w=160&sz=9&hl=en&start=19&um=1&tbnid=l-Yxf-KP4m6leM:&tbnh=99&tbnw=94&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dclassic%2Bpanama%2Bhat%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG for about $50 = $60 over the Internet, and even some nice ones in key west for about $45, so I am only interested in buying one in Panama if it is a good deal. I am not interested in crap (such as what you find at the Straw market in Nassau). If any of you have actually purchased such a hat while on a cruise that stopped in Colón, Panama, please tell me what price I can expect and where is the best shop to find such a hat. Are they being sold by vendors right at the pier or do I have to go into a special store? What is a starting sale price and what is a "good deal?" Thanks in advance. nybumpkin Posted June 13, 2007 #2 Share Posted June 13, 2007 My husband purchased one at one of the shops at the pier for around $20. I have no idea what grade it is, but it's held up well and he loves it!
Robb Posted June 25, 2007 #3 Share Posted June 25, 2007 I bought one in Panama exactly like my neighbor (he only buys the best) and he paid about 50 for his. After much bargaining I got mine for 6 USD. I actually think mine is better made than his.
snorkelman Posted June 25, 2007 Author #4 Share Posted June 25, 2007 I bought one in Panama exactly like my neighbor (he only buys the best) and he paid about 50 for his. After much bargaining I got mine for 6 USD. I actually think mine is better made than his. That's the kind of deals that I like to do myself. What was the first asking price? Where was this? At the pier somewhere?

RHefley228 Posted July 7, 2007 #6 Share Posted July 7, 2007 Oddly enough, the best place to buy them is in Cuenca, Ecuador, where most of them are made.
ron46936 Posted July 7, 2007 #7 Share Posted July 7, 2007 Indeed one of the great trick question is where Panama hats are made. It is indeed Equador. There are a lot of different grades ranging in price from $25 to several hundred dollars
RetiredFL Posted July 9, 2007 #8 Share Posted July 9, 2007 Panama hats are made in Ecuador. They were called Panama hats as the workers on the canal wore them and when they returned from Panama the name stuck.
