Dhobie

Don't get the dreaded Dhobie Rash - [galloping crutch rot]

A warning to those on longer cruises [NSWP] doing laundry [dhobie].

The water used onboard is usually very soft compared with what you would have at home.

When doing your laundry - use half the detergent you would usually use.

Then double rinse in the machine if possible.

A reaction with the detergent still in washed clothes - can lead to "dhobie rash" on areas of the body that are hot & sweaty.

If you should get this nasty red rash - it is easily cured by washing the effected area with Selsun shampoo - be careful where else it gets as it is powerfull stuff. Don't expect a doctor to be able to cure this as it is rare ashore.

A fellow officer went to 3 Aust. doctors & all failed cure it. After I told him about selsun, which he already had, it cleared up in 3 days.

Dhobie whalla? was the Indian crew person on the old time ships that did the laundry. Therefore doing your laundry at sea is DHOBIE.
