Whale Watching Report - Juneau 5/5/04

Great day on the water today, in the Juneau tour area:

35-40 Killer Whales
2-3 Humpback Whales
Many Harbor Seals, Steller Sea Lions, Bald Eagles, and some scattered Dall Porpoise.

Sunny & calm water

Was the water calm or rough? I get seasick on small boats in rough seas, but I really want to go whale watching.

Juneau waters are not exposed to the open ocean, primarily the waters in the Juneau area are calm. If you feel you are prone to motion sensitivities, you should take appropriate precautions though.

We will be in Skagway, Ketchikan & Juneau the week of july 24th. Our shore excursion preferences (as of today-we change our minds often) are
1. Whale watching
2. glacier walking (can this only be accomplished by a helicoptor landing?)
3. canoe or kayak type trip(I thought that I read somewhere that there are rapids)
4. Shopping in ketchikan
5. seeing some totem poles
6. I'm not sure...

We prefer doing the ship tours(fear of missing the ship fuels this)
Which is the best stop to accomplish each of these??
We do love to hike & do not mind some mild-moderate levels of exertion.

I'll be in Juneau in about 1-1/2 weeks. Is it colder when you go whale watching than it is in Juneau? I can get the weather on weather.com, but when the shore excursions go further inland, I assume it gets colder, right?

I would take a jacket on whale watching. I also like a hat to contain my long hair. [img]http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif[/img] On the inside passage- yes you do need a fly in to walk on a glacier. Whale watching is out of Juneau, kayaking is excellent out of Ketchikan- easy to see totems here too, just walking around the town.

Thanks for the info-now I have to deal with my fear of heights and helicoptors if I want to walk on a glacier!!!!!!!!!!! Believe it or not I have 2 kids who are avid rock climbers & then there is me!!!!!

Palomino, Howdy, neighbor! I have to agree with you re: Budget Queens' hair. Correct me if I'm wrong, Queen, but aren't you a schoolteacher with almost grown (or grown) children? Now I'm gonna have to visualize you as hippie chick instead of school teacher. I 'm 50 years old and my hair is past my shoulders, longer than what most women do at my age, but I just can't get into the matronly look yet.

By the way, a big thank you for all your info, I've always enjoyed reading your posts. I'm very excited about our first trip to Alaska, you and a few others here have been so generous.

Hello Irene, Have no fear of the helicopter. I'm afraid of heights also. In fact, I won't go past the 2nd step of a ladder. My daughter and I took a ride on one a couple of years ago and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute. We will be cruising again at the end of the month, to celebrate my parent's 50th. I'm trying to get them to come along with us!

okay, now I am getting brave & daring & I am wondering if there is a combination whale watching/helicopter trip with glacier "trek" excursion offered in Juneau!! I will have to re-read the excursion list offered by NCL again.

Wow, under 50, with hair, and 7 1/2 weeks of vacation a year!!! Boy you sure know how to earn it though. Of course, working in a prison may be a step up from where you were? You did move voluntarily right? They didn't check your email time or something.
