Ok, it's Monday, it's hot and I need something to make me smile so I came on the boards. One of the posts today is what is BEST about Princess and, I'm soooo tempted to post "The Love Boat".

Does anyone else miss that silly 1970s tv show that started the love of cruising for so many?

LOL Fun topic

I have a friend who is a TA and he told me that Gavin MacLeod (Captin Stubing) often attends Princess functions like cocktail parties for Travel Agents.

Sounds like fun!

And yes I miss the show ;)

Nope, I don't miss it at all. We still have those that join CC that believe that cruising, like we saw on the Love Boat Series, is actually the way cruises operate. Talk about some false advertising for the cruising industry.

Ban the Love Boat Series, all it does it tick off first timers that believe that is what they should expect on their first cruise and many are disappointed when everyone can't remember their name from the moment they board. The Love Boat TV show was a work of fiction with a trickle of actuality dribbled in now and then.

lol - yeah, I actually took a Mexican Riv cruise on the original Pacific Princess and was expecting the entryway to look like it did on the TV show, the public rooms to look the same, everything. But when it was all said and done, I wasn't all that disappointed with the experience.

What amazes me today is looking at all these ginormous ships and comparing them to the glorified yacht that is the original Pacific Princess. At 27,000 tons (give or take, that's my recollection anyway) the original Pacific Princess was downright tiny in comparison to what we have today.

And back on topic for a moment - yes, I miss the show. I thought it was great.

What I found funny, watching some of the re-runs a few years ago, was how the script writers would slip little things in to help educate the masses - like the fact that they actually had to pay for their cocktails. Apparently they had the same problems even back then, and Princess must have asked to have the series writers to 'splain a few things to cut off the complaints.

But weren't those cabins HUGE? LOL. :)

Not really sure if I miss the show, however, it was fun to be able to sail on the Caribbean Princess on her Maiden Voyage in April 2004 and have drinks in the casino with Jill Whelan, the actress who played Captain Stubing's daughter, Vickie. She got married on the ship the same night she christened it as the "Godmother". Most of the cast attended the wedding, but did not stay on for the voyage.

That was one of my all-time favorite TV shows. It's what got me interested in the idea of cruising in the first place. I love that my romantic fella is not just a shipboard romance - I've been married to him for over 30 years, and EVERY cruise is so much better than any romance I ever watched on that show. I really do hope it eventually comes out on DVD.

As much as I dislike the "reality show" genre, I think a cruiseship would be the perfect venue for a reality series.

Anybody ever watch "Airline"? I can see these types of plotlines developed similarly onboard a cruiseship. This might work but I think the basic premise of the original "Love Boat" series wouldn't float. jmo

Gotta love the love boat, went on the original PP ourselves twice-TV did'nt do her justice. In the 70's, If you did'nt appear on the love boat-you were not part of the celebrity click. We went on one her last cruises w/Princess,she was small but she had some magic to her - don't forget the main stairs. LOL.

The Love Boat was a measure of popularity when I was in college. It was aired on Saturday evenings, and the big joke was, "I have no love life so I'm sitting in my dorm room by myself and watching The Love Boat!"

By the way, I loved the show and I'd probably watch it today if it was on.

Whether you loved or hated the "Love Boat: series, wish it to return or not, it can be credited for making the cruising industry explode in popularity. For that (and a few very fond memories) I am grateful to the Love Boat series!
