Can anyone give me any ideas what I can do in Hilo as I've been here 2x already and have already done VNP, Rainbow and Akaka Falls. Not sure what Boiling Pots is. Can you give me a good route to spend day in port. I would also like to swim in "lava pools"?? Thanks ahead.[/quote]

You can rent a car rather cheaply through Budget. They have a shuttle to the Pier.

  • 1 month later...

Here is a link to some of the beachs and ponds on the Big Island. Ahalanui Park, Hawaii You can see Ahalanui (the hot pond) and some of the Kapoho Tide Pools. Ahalanui is deep in some parts...over my head...and in other parts I can stand if the tideis low.

Just got back last night! We did go to the hot pond and it was wonderful....would recommend it. Thanks again....great suggestions!!!

We've been to Hilo before so wanted to see something different. We went to Rainbow falls then Akaka Falls prior to go to the hot pond. This was a great day...since we've been to VNP before....

kapoho2 - thanks for the info on Richardson Beach. We are thinking about stopping there on the way back (depending on time) after our day at VNP.

I've been to VNP but the kids haven't. The Puna area also intriques me but since this trip is for the kids I'll have to save Puna for another time.

We stopped there prior to driving to VNP last year. It's a beautiful beach area with trees, ponds, a park service office building (not for public), parking spaces, rest rooms, picnic tables and a life guard at snorkeling/swimming area. No food/drinks available, take them with you. There is a drinking fountain.

The waves were getting a little strong around eleven thirty when I left. Consider going there first and then to VNP. Saw some green sea turtles while snorkeling there.

Enjoy your day, we did.
