Seatravelers Posted August 5, 2007 #1 Share Posted August 5, 2007 We will be in Amsterdam in Sept and want to do it on our own. We are considering purchasing IAmsterdam passes and would like to know what others experience or thoughts are on this pass. Seems like it would be all we would or could do in one day and since the museums we want are included plus canal cruises, what would be better. Thanks for any input. Smooth sailings to all.:)
Ine Posted August 6, 2007 #2 Share Posted August 6, 2007 It will depend on how many museums you want (and can) visit on that 1 day of course. Not all museums participate on the programm (like e.g. Ann Frank house), so check this website: http://www.vvvamsterdam.nl/ go to "to do" and which businesses are on the programm. Public transport is easy to do, most things are even walkable and you will find canaltours offered on many places in town.
Seatravelers Posted August 6, 2007 Author #3 Share Posted August 6, 2007 Ine - thank you for the information. I think we were looking at the public transportation part of this as an added bonus to get from one part of town to another faster and save time at the museums and other sites. Also, we have decided to do the Anne Frank house another time.
Ine Posted August 6, 2007 #4 Share Posted August 6, 2007 There also is a "daycard" for public transport in Amsterdam. It costs only Euro 6.50 per person for 24 hours. Of course just for unlimited transportation, nothing else. http://www.gvb.nl/english/travellers/ticketsandfares/GVB-24-hours-ticket.html
Seatravelers Posted August 6, 2007 Author #5 Share Posted August 6, 2007 Thanks again, this should definitely help us decide something today! Marcia
pcur Posted August 11, 2007 #6 Share Posted August 11, 2007 Quite frankly, the hop on/off canal boat will take you to all of the museums. I recommend it, but depending on the time of year you go, the lines can be extensive, so you may not get to more than a few in one day. There are two routes, and you can board on both sides of the canal overpass in front of the central train station. It's about a 10 minute walk down from where the cruise ship docks. If your ship docks further down, there is a tram line directly across the street from the docking area.
Ine Posted August 11, 2007 #7 Share Posted August 11, 2007 Remember the daycard for public transport if NOT valid on the hopon/off boat, since that is a private company.
Seatravelers Posted August 12, 2007 Author #8 Share Posted August 12, 2007 Thank you both, we have decided on the hoponhopoff canal boat and have already bought our tickets for that and the VanGogh museum. We feel this will give us the opportunity to see things we really want on this trip and are excited about our plans.... Thanks for you input! thehen Posted August 15, 2007 #9 Share Posted August 15, 2007 We just returned from two days in Amsterdam prior to our Rotterdam cruise and used the canal hop-on tour boats. They were great, and we had no problems with crowds and getting where we needed to go. We purchased the ticket that included the Rijks Museum. One comment, the canal boats do not start until 10 am, and the latest returns about 9 pm. We decided to see the museum first thing in the morning (good idea because they can get very crowded later in the day), so we redeemed our voucher at 9:30 am as soon as the ticket office opened, and made our way directly to the museum. Got there before major crowding, and then had the rest of the day to see the city. elaine
