Le Havre to Paris/Montmartre?

Recommended Posts

Is there a good way to reach Montmartre from Le Havre? And once there, are there "not-to-be-missed" nooks and crannies? Recommendations for cafes or bistros?

We are taking our daughter (17) and she is interested in seeing the artists area and Le Moulin Rouge. We'd like to do it on our own, so any suggestions and links you have would be MOST APPRECIATED!

Not so sure on the getting to Paris, but once there take the metro to Abbesses. You have a short (but very steep!) walk up to Place du Tetre, which is the artists square behind Sacre Coeur. Beware -the artists will pester you a little for a quick commission. We agreed to have our daughter drawn a few years ago but the results were nothing like her.

You could then walk (or take the funicular) down the steps in front of Sacre Coeur and walk along to Pigalle which is interesting to say the least! (This is the red-light district but is pretty safe (especially during the day). This will take you to the Moulin Rouge.

If you want to see some art I would recommend the Musee D'Orsay which is home to a fabulous collection of Impressionist works.

The joy of Paris is just waking around. There is so much to see!

The train takes 2-2 1/2 hours. Le Havre's train station is about a mile from the port though, in most cases, passengers will have to take the shuttle from the ship to the center of Le Havre and then a taxi to the station (or take a taxi directly from the port to the station). Trains run to the Gare St-Lazare in Paris roughly every hour. RT fare is 28.10 EUR, 21.10 if you're 60 or over. After you arrive, head N/NE.

Give yourself peace of mind and take the cruise line bus - French trains DO occasionally strike, as we discovered in June. If the bus lets you off near the Eiffel Tower, as many seem to do, best way to Montmartre is to take the Metro - Bir Hakeim station (by the river on Quai Branly at Boulevard de Grenelle) to Etoile on Line 6, then Line 2 (towards Nation), getting off at Anvers. Walk two blocks up rue Steinkerque to the funicular that takes you up to Sacre-Coeur church (costs another Metro ticket). At the top of the hill, take any street about a block to the left, and then turn right, and you'll be in Place du Tertre, touristy, but definitely what you think of when you think of Monmartre. From there, just wander - I took rue Norvins, which comes off Place du Tertre to the left (facing away from the direction you've come) and then took a right at rue Girardon, which eventually turns into a flight of steps that takes you down to the Lamarck-Caulaincourt Metro station. From there, you can take Line 12 in the direction Mairie d'Issy and change at Pasteur for Line 6 (direction Etoile) and get off at Bir Hakeim and you'll be a block or two from the Eiffel Tower. Abbesses station, in Montmartre, is on the same line, and is great sight in itself, one of the more elaborate Art Nouveau stations designed by Guimard. Enjoy!
