Globaliser Posted August 8, 2007 #2 Share Posted August 8, 2007 Husband refuse to use public transportation. What a pretty small-minded attitude towards London. Everyone in London uses public transport at least some of the time - it is often simply the best way.
sailingkiwi Posted August 8, 2007 #3 Share Posted August 8, 2007 Husband refuse to use public transportation. Beats sitting in traffic jams for a good portion of most days. You can also do the hop on hop off bus. The other option is simply to walk. Most attractions are within walking distance of each other. If you get tired jump in a cab. Another option is to do walking tours - check out London Walks - www.walks.com. These tours are highly recommended.
jtb123 Posted August 8, 2007 Author #4 Share Posted August 8, 2007 It's not that my husband is to uppy to use public transportation but he has trouble getting around and also gets lost VERY easy and thought a private guide would be the easiest for him. sailingkiwi Posted August 8, 2007 #5 Share Posted August 8, 2007 It's not that my husband is to uppy to use public transportation but he has trouble getting around and also gets lost VERY easy and thought a private guide would be the easiest for him. That's a completely different story then, not being able to use it is totally different to refusing to use it. I did a Google search and number one was this company - http://www.britishtours.com/day-tours/intro.html - it looks like tours start from £185 for 3 hours (for 2 people). I really recommend the hop on hop off bus tours then. They take you to all the major tour spots and you get a commentary as well. There are two companies - The Big Bus Company - http://www.bigbus.co.uk/index.html and The Original London Sightseeing Tour - http://www.theoriginaltour.com/
Globaliser Posted August 8, 2007 #6 Share Posted August 8, 2007 ... he has trouble getting around and also gets lost VERY easy ...As sailingkiwi says, if he actually can't easily use public transport, then it's a very different story.
SeaBop Posted August 8, 2007 #7 Share Posted August 8, 2007 In 2002, prior to our Royal Princess cruise with my 80-year old mother, we used Ian Scott who is a very delightful and personable gentleman. (He was highly recommend by the owners of "In the English Manner". They rent furnished flats by the week in all parts of London and we have used them on three trips.) One weekday morning in London he took us to the Tower of London, St. Paul's and Westminster Abby. On a Saturday afternoon he got us into a private tour at the John Soane Museum (near the Inns of Court) to see the Hogarth paintings. Fabulous! http://www.soane.org/ On a wonderful day in Kent we saw Winston Churchill's "Chartwell", Anne Boleyn's "Heaver Castle" and Charles Darwin's home "Down House", with lunch at a charming country pub. He charges about 55GPB per hour and drives an elegant Jaguar. e-mail: ianstours2004@lycos.co.uk Please tell him Charlotte and Hank sent you :)
Kindlychap Posted August 9, 2007 #8 Share Posted August 9, 2007 What a pretty small-minded attitude towards London. Everyone in London uses public transport at least some of the time - it is often simply the best way. My wife doesn't. Public transport in London is not pleasant. The tube is far too hot and crowded, and buses are not much better. Buses can be complicated for non-Londoners at first. Well, the whole thing can. The ONLY reason I would use public transport in London is money. Now I rarely have to endure the capital, I can now afford to avoid it. But then I live in the country...... (where I do use the buses occasionally - at least when my wife isn't around to drive me!) Matthew
bnkrpzlawr Posted August 10, 2007 #9 Share Posted August 10, 2007 We just returned from London 3 days ago and we did an all day tour with Ali Bennett. She is very knowledgable and extremely nice. I have no problem in recommending her services. She can be reached as follows: email: ali@alipal.com website: http://www.alipaltours.com The only issue that we had was that one of the places we wanted to see turned out to be closed that day. I don't hold Ali accountable for that. Anyway, hope this helps.
Casshew Posted August 12, 2007 #10 Share Posted August 12, 2007 For a fun, easy & informative day I recommend Harry Norman Tours.. Harry is the best, he used to be a London Cab driver, he knows everything about everything and is a fun guide/host for the day. Give him a try, you won't regret it!
