amber2007 Posted August 17, 2007 #1 Share Posted August 17, 2007 Day 1- we arrive around 11:00, so after we get to the hotel and drop off our bags (Milford Plaza) we plan to go to Central Park. We are going to pick up something to eat, go the the park, and visit the zoo. Next, we will head back to the Times Square area and go to the Rockefeller plaza, look around and do the Top of the Rock tour. After that we will have supper and just explore Times Square. Day 2- Get up bright and early and go downtown, China Town, and the surronding area. Back to Midtown, and try to make it to the Wax museum and Grand Central Station. Oh, and we plan on shopping along the way, is this possible??
BlueHerons Posted August 17, 2007 #2 Share Posted August 17, 2007 Yes, your plan sounds very do-able. On day one, after Central Park and the zoo, head downtown to Battery Park and hop on the Staten Island Ferry for million dollar views of the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge and lower Manhattan. They are especially good as the city lights up at dusk.
Carolyn R Posted August 17, 2007 #3 Share Posted August 17, 2007 Little Italy is right next to Chinatown, good food at lots of sidewalk cafes. The famous Stage Deli is a good lunch stop too, wonderful hot pastrami sandwich, enough for two, as well as lots of other yummy Jewish deli favorites. There is also a water taxi that goes between various areas in Manhattan and Brooklyn and costs $20 for a full day hop on and hop off pass.
Cassandra Posted August 17, 2007 #4 Share Posted August 17, 2007 Are you talking about the Central Park Zoo? Is that still open? The others above I agree with. And if you are up for it, visit Ground Zero. It's all construction now with the new buildings, but you can still probably see the memorials people leave up. Name game Posted August 17, 2007 #5 Share Posted August 17, 2007 It is definitely doable and you will find many other things to do along the way. The Central Park zoo is still open and quite cute. It's small and can be done quickly.
willysgrandma Posted August 17, 2007 #6 Share Posted August 17, 2007 Very do-able itinerary. Have you looked into the Hop on Hop Off buses?

Oh, and we plan on shopping along the way, is this possible?? Might I suggest something to maximize your time... After leaving the zoo @ Central Park Walk down 5th Avenue (take advantage of the shopping as you are walking towards Top of the rock)and make your way towards The top of the Rock and then come down to hang out around Rockafellar Center and then from there walk west towards Times Sqaure. Logistically this makes more sense and you will definately maximize your time :p

jennbill Posted August 18, 2007 #9 Share Posted August 18, 2007 Make time to visit the World Trade Center site. Look into doing a tour with Tribute WTC 9/11 (tributenyc.org). This is an organization of people who were affected by 9/11 in one form or the other. Survivors, relatives of the victims, rescue workers, local residents, etc. volunteer their time to lead tours around the site. No two tours will be the same as everyone's experience is different. Our tour guides were the parents of the youngest firefighter killed in the collapse. We later visited his station house, which was very close to our hotel in Manhattan. This single station lost more men than any other in the collapse. You'll never forget this experience.
