amagar Posted August 31, 2007 #1 Share Posted August 31, 2007 Hi, I know Celebrity (and other cruise lines) don't have access to regular-season football. But two years ago on Princess -- when Pitt played Seattle in Super Bowl -- Princess showed the game in a theater and made a party of it, serving buckets of beer, nachos, hot dogs, popcorn, etc. Does Celebrity provide similar for Super Bowl? FYI: The Princess broadcast was in English during play action and Spanish during commercials. Also, the Princess party was a full house with dozens wearing jerseys. Some wild Brits livened things by running up and down the aisles, flapping their arms and sqawking like seahawks.... Don't fret, there were no other outrageous displays during cruise. Just some Super Bowl fun.
raudacruise Posted August 31, 2007 #2 Share Posted August 31, 2007 We were on Infinity in April. They had the final 4 (both semis and final) on TV. But there really wasn't a lot of on board notification about it. I think they they also showed in one of the lounges. But I seriously doubt you are going to see what you described ;). But if you get enough folks together and approach guest relations they probably will set up a big screen, nachos, popcorn, hot dogs. Beer buckets would be on your tab. We had some special version of ESPN for the games where there were no commercials - and the announcers didn't realize for a while that the mikes were open. "Where did you go to eat last night; Wasn't she hot;....)" entertaining I guess. I hope you are a Buckeye fan even if it looks you might be a Steeler fan for the NFL ;). amagar Posted August 31, 2007 Author #3 Share Posted August 31, 2007 I'm a Browns fan...and I'm sitting here watching young Brady Quinn get some experience and Cleveland quashed Chicago in the final pre-season game of the year.... It whet my football appetite. Not a Pit fan, but I would LOVE to see Bill Cowher coach the Browns next year...or even the year after.
Shirley and Les Posted August 31, 2007 #4 Share Posted August 31, 2007 ...Not a Pit fan, but I would LOVE to see Bill Cowher coach the Browns next year...or even the year after. Bill C. had an extensive interview with a TV reporter here in Pittsburgh a week or so ago. He swore up and down that his primary interest is learning to play the piano. Yeah, right! The Steelers recently introduced a team mascot. It is a guy in steelworker garb named Steely McBeam. It is a good resemblance of Coach Cowher complete with jutting chin and needing a shave. I can't wait until the day he shows up at Heinz field on the opposing sideline and everyone realizes the mascot was patterned after him. Goodbye Steely!:D Les

Would have been better if Brady stayed home instead of going to Notre Dame ;). But I would say that folks in Columbus are rooting for him. Dublin (where I live) obviously is. Cowher coaching the Browns? Umm, I'm guessing shorts in Antartica before that happens.
judyfssw Posted August 31, 2007 #6 Share Posted August 31, 2007 When we were on the Summit (Panama Canal), they showed the Super Bowl game on the TV and it was in wide screen in the nightclub. They had goodies and I think that everyone who watched had a good time.
amagar Posted August 31, 2007 Author #7 Share Posted August 31, 2007 I saw your Steely guy and thought the same thing! Sort of a cross between Cowher and the Brawny paper towel guy...teehee! You may be surprised by this, but there is a very large Cleveland-based Browns contingency openly urging Browns management to go after Cowher. The Plain Dealer (Cleveland paper's) columnists have written about it...and you'll find it on Browns backers chat boards all over the place. In my romanticized view of my Ohio childhood....most Cleveland men looked like Cowher. Big and tough. Handsome only in the most rugged sense. They were factory men. Now the stadium seat are filled with computer doughboys...cigar-smoking white collar...and blue-collar button pushers. I know sensitive men are in big demand (or at least have been in my age group (40) and younger. But this Ohio gal likes men with a dash of Cowher toughness... My husband is a computer jockey by day, but chops wood on the weekends!

As a native Pittsburgher with all of the normal Pittsburgh/Cleveland bias, I always thought that most Cleveland women looked like Cowher. :D :D :D I'm sorry! Did too much of cutting down trees, cutting them up, hauling and then splitting pieces that my back still hurts thinking about it. My folks had a wood heated house for a while and lets just say it was rustic+. Don't know if you know where Grand Lake St. Marys is. Thats where I grew up. Kathie44 Posted August 31, 2007 #10 Share Posted August 31, 2007 We were on Mercury in Acapulco last Feb. for the Super Bowl. We went on an all day excursion and got back to the ship at 4:30 PM. We went to the Pavilion Club for the game. They had tables set up for food and the bar was busy. Waiters were circulating. We got there too late to get comfortable seats and the smoke kind of took over, so we went back to our room at half-time. DH dozed off and on while watching the game and I read my book while keeping track of the score. It was much more comfortable in the room. We could have gone to the alternate, non-smoking venue, Cinema 6, but I can't remember if there was food/drinks there, too. It was OK, but we're not rabid fans and the smoke was suffocating us, even DH and he doesn't have asthma like I do.
hajekfam Posted August 31, 2007 #11 Share Posted August 31, 2007 We have been on cruises during championship games. As long as the cruiseline can get a sateliite feed, they usually have the game on in one of the lounges. They served hot dogs, nachos, chili, etc. and made a party out of it. amagar Posted August 31, 2007 Author #13 Share Posted August 31, 2007 Thanks, all, for the responses! Rauda -- I don't know where Grand Lakes St. Mary is...but the name is appealing. I grew up in Medina, about 30 miles south of Cleveland. Farmland then. Suburb now. My parents' soybean field is a golf course. But planners had wanted a polo field, I kid you not. Their house, with them in it, still sits there with corn cobs for insulation (the main part, two rooms, was built in 1834). I never chopped wood. But as a kid, I fed, milked, picked, seeded, canned, frozen every Ohio farm crop you can think of. My hands were often stained brown from shucking black walnuts. And, having grown soft like my fellow Cleveland Browns fans, I smile mightily every time I shop at a grocery ... and so easily pick up that night's dinner. Although it never tastes as good. Les, teehee. Good rival form. Some of the women do, but not nearly so many as in ... Cincinnati!
Pontius Navigator Posted August 31, 2007 #14 Share Posted August 31, 2007 I suspect that the cruise line's reaction to something like this would depend on its itinerary and passenger make-up. I think you could probably have sceened the Super Bowl, whatever that is, in a small cinema whereas the World Cup might have attracted a larger audience. If the passengers were predominantly Australian you might even get them packing the theatre to watch cricket and ever ready to explain the simple rules to strangers.:p
jerseygirl3 Posted August 31, 2007 #15 Share Posted August 31, 2007 We were onboard the Infinity last year and Celebrity had a great Superbowl Party. They set up their big lounge with one large projection TV in the center, and then smaller flat screen tv's scattered around the lounge. We opted to form a group with our friends around one of the smaller TV's (when I say smaller, I don't mean small, it was still a very good size, just not as large as a projection screen). They had a great buffet set up in the lounge with hoagies, nachos, burgers, chips, etc. They even ran a betting pool and I won $350.
Spender Nui Posted August 31, 2007 #16 Share Posted August 31, 2007 Several years ago we siled on HAL over the Super Bowl. We didn't know it but they had 2 hall of famers aboard, Chuck Bednarik and Y A Tittle. They had 2 presentations in the main theater and both were packed. On game night they hosted the party. It was a great surprise.

kitty9 Posted August 31, 2007 #19 Share Posted August 31, 2007 I was on X for three of the last four Super Bowls (I was in Detroit to see my beloved Steelers beat Seattle), and they not only showed the game in the theater, but on the TV's in the casino and in the cabins. You had to watch with Spanish announcers, but that didn't matter. BTW, I can't stand the mascot and I think is name sounds like something from a porn star---Steely McBeam, yuck

Bednarik almost killed Kathy Lee,s husband Frank Gifford during a game.... Actually Chuck mentioned several times that he didn't like Kathy Lee. He and Frank Gifford are actually friends. Kathy lee when introduced to Chuck said his name sounded like a pasta. He also told us what he was saying after the hit when that famous picture of him jumping in the air while Gifford was laying on the ground was taken ..."THIS ******* GAME IS OVER!". He also said it wasn't because Gifford was out but because the Eagles had picked up the fumbled ball.
