Our Alaska Pix

Recommended Posts

The pictures were a combo of tours and from the boat, the whale pix were from Capt Larry's trip. Some people said they saw whales off the ship, but we never did, wrong place at the wrong time I guess LOL!

All of the pix going thru Tracy Arm are from the ship, some from our balcony but the majority from the bow (I believe that was where my husband was, though somehow, I never saw him).

The other pix -- glacier trek, we booked thru NorthStar Trekking -- was awesome, take the longer trek if you have time/$, I wish we had, an hour was not long enough! (Juneau)

We did a photo safari tour up the yukon through Southeast Tours (Skagway)

And in Ketchikan we took the Island Wings float plane to the misty fjiords.

These were ALL recommendations from reading these very boards, I would never have found them alone (well maybe but how would I have know they were so good?)

Don't worry, the scenery you get on the ship is pretty darn amazing, I will tell you, tracy arm was one of the major highlights, that scenery almost wants to make me cry from how beautiful it was!

I hope you ALL have as great a time as we did, I know you will icon_smile.gif

Carol,

Your DH did a terrific job of taking pictures. I leave this Sat. and am really thrilled about it after seeing the photos. So glad no one was injured in the mishap in Victoria. Sorry you missed out on seeing it. Another time perhaps.

Happy cruising.

Thanks for posting those fabulous pictures.

I've been searching the internet for awhile trying to find good ones, but yours are by far the best that I've seen.

We leave June 27th on Serenade and seeing these just makes it harder to wait.

Great pictures! Now I really can't wait for next year's cruise on the Diamond. We have so many pics from our many trips to Alaska but next year will be first with a digital camera!

Thanks for sharing your pictures! Can you tell me if the glacier trek excursion through Northstar Trekking was the "helicopter glacier walkabout (1 hr walk) or the helicopter glacer trek (2 hrs walk)"?

Hey Gwhs,

We were on the 1 hour walk, but if I had realized there was a 2, I would have done it without hesitation. I booked this thru Orca (to book it all together timewise), so I guess I didn't realize enough to ask!

As I said, given the choice after the fact, I would go for the 2 hours, one hour seemed to fly by!

Thanks for the info, Carol. Due to other things that we want to do in Juneau, I think we'll stick to the 3 1/4 hours trip (1-hour glacier walk). Your pictures from the glacier walk are awesome and I'm so looking forward to this excursion.

icon_smile.gifCarol, Thanks for the pictures. Some of the best I have seen. We are on the sapphire leaving the 13th of June.We are booked with Northstar trekking for the 2hr glacier trek. Was it freezing on the glacier? I know they supply you with boots, crampons gloves, jackets and wind pants but what should we wear below the outer garb? I was also excited about trying glacier water bu my friend said there are some sort of glacier worms. Is this true? Yuck!Just curious is the pilot your tour guide with Northstar? Is he the one we are to tip? thanks Lisa

Wife and I were on the Oosterdam docked (kinda) next to the Diamond in Victoria. We were on our veranda when the ship hit the dock. Were their any injuries as a result? Did you get to go into town?

Great pictures! The telling sign of the great weather is seeing Michelle of Island Wings in a sleeveless shirt! Of course, I am sure her blood can go sleeveless at a totally different temp than mine!

Lisa -- I was wearing (I think lol), a long sleeve wicking type shirt, another shirt and a sweatshirt and long underwear and jeans, and I was not cold at all with the gear they gave us on top of that. I'm sure it will be even warmer in june! I really was not sure what to expect, and like everyone recomends -- layers layers layers icon_wink.gif I haven't noticed any worms in the water, but I only took a tiny sip and kept the bottle for a momento (Northstar gave us labels to put on the bottle -- glacier water, hand bottled at the source) icon_smile.gif

Dick- I heard some people were taken off the Diamond that evening, but that was due to a previous illness, as far as I heard no one was injured due to the incident. We really didn't feel much of a bumb, sort of heard something while at dinner, but not like you would have thought we crashed into the dock icon_smile.gif

Carol:

Loved your Alaska pix. Thanks. We are on Sapphire Princess on 7/11 with the aame itinerary you took on Diamond Princess. We are looking at the list of available sightseeing tours. Are there any tours you particularly enjoyed? Any you found disappointing?

Thanks again

The pictures were great. They brought back memories from our trip last year. The bear pix out of Skagway look just like ours.

I'm mighty partial to Sony digitals I had a 3.2 megapixle for a couple years and just recently bought their new 8 megapixle. Whichever you buy, be sure to get a good sized memory stick unless you have a laptop to download your day's pix to.

Carol,

WOW is right! Your photos are gorgeous! Looks like you had fantastic weather! We are leaving on June 16th from Seward to Vancouver and I would love to have some of that sunshine.

What kind of camera did you use? I am thinking about getting a digital and am not sure what kind to get.

We are using Michelle's Island Air as well so I was very excited to see your photos from that outing.

Thanks for posting those pics!

What camera did you use?

Essie,

We did Orca Enterprises in Juneau for whale watching, as everyone says here, Capt Larry was great, and a small group was a pleasure!
We had them book our glacier walk, but that was through NorthStar Trekking, they too were excellent!

In Skagway, we booked a photo safari tour with Southeast Tours, was great driving and getting to stop, though this tour did not go all the way up to Carcross, or (much to my dismay) Emerald Lake .... but it was still good!

In Ketchikan, we did the float plane with Michelle from Island Wings, this was just simply amazing, she is an awesome pilot, we thoroughly enjoyed this trip, I highly recommend it!

Hope this gives you a few ideas, have a GREAT!!! time, I know you will :)
