Costa Maya

I read that the pier in Costa Maya has been damaged and is not expected to open for 6 to 8 months. I will be on the Sun in November and I wondered what you more experienced cruisers think NCL will do. Will they change ports or will we have an extra sea day?

Thanks for your thoughts on the subject.

has already changed your itenerary to Great Stirup Cay---their private island due to Costa Maya being closed until Sept. 2008.

I am waiting to see what they do with the SPIRIT in Dec.

I am waiting as well. I don't expect any announcements for a few more weeks til things quiet down. They can do an alternative now and have another hurricane hit in late Sept or early Oct. I think they are doing the right thing by holding off for now.

Great Stirrip Cay is off the East coast of Florida -- nowhere near Hurricanes Dean and Felix. Neversink, like you, I'm cruising on NCL to the Western Caribbean in November. And like you, I've been waiting patiently for NCL to make some sort of announcement. But from everything I've read, NCL will wait until the last possible moment to make any sort of announcement.

One thing is for certain: We will not be stopping in Costa Maya. My guess is that NCL will give us another day at sea, but I wouldn't rule out Cozumel. We'll just have to be patient and wait until NCL makes a formal announcement. Check the NCL web site regularly. Anything else you hear is just rumor.

Found this while reading the news on Cruise Critic tonight:

"Norwegian Cruise Line

star2.bmpNorwegian Sun, which begins a new itinerary from Miami beginning October 27 will call at Roatan, Belize City, at sea, Great Stirrup Cay (NCL’s “private island”). "

I'm a little disappointed that it will mean another day at sea instead of another stop.

9ill9an,

On the home page of Cruise Critic on the right hand side go under "Today Cruise Critic" go down to Cruise News click Costa Maya closed until September 2008. It will have a list of ships and the changes of ports of call. NCL will be listed with this new change.

Good luck,

Actually, Great Stirrup Cay has always been on the Sun's itineraries for this coming northern winter season. This is nothing new.

Thanks, crazydaisy90.

Although personally, I'm pleased - I love sea days.

I wonder how the'd work out the second sea day. The schedule now is: Roatan, Belieze, Costa Maya, at sea, Great Stirrup Cay.

Would it change to: Roatan, Belieze, At Sea, At Sea, GSC?

Or would they change the whole schedule or stay for two days at Belieze, or Roatan?

The port definitely won't be ready: Closed until September 2008 (from CC news, as posted above).

Well, now that it's officially closed, I'm curious to see what NCL does for the Spirit itinerary. I really don't want to start off the crusie with 2 days at sea. One at the beginning and one at the end is plenty for a 7 day cruise IMO.

Is Progresso in range? Or maybe Grand Cayman or something?

you want another port day, so would DH and I am happy with sea days or a good mixture. I will say it isn't a particularly good itinerary, but there isn't too much that can be done. Let's hope we don't have anymore storms.

We pretty much will have to bend with the wind (pardon the pun) if we have an extra sea day we will have to accept it. Progresso really isn't much anyway and many have probably done Grand Cayman other times. We too are waiting the decision. Let's hope they come up with something.

i heard that maybe cancun will be an option from my TA...

I'm sure it's just speculation on the TA's part, but I'd be happy with Cancun. I'd really like Roatan, but I believe it's too far away. I'm not sure how distant Grand Cayman is, but that'd also be a great stop for an already very nice itinerary.

I've discussed this before, to include Progresso or Grand Cayman would mean a complete shakeup of the Spirit's itinerary, and burning up much more diesel fuel to get you to all the ports on time, which I doubt NCL would do. More expenses, same income, far less profits. The Spirit's fares weren't that high to start with.

Playa Del Carmen or Cancun are possibilities. The major problem with both of them is the normal current, tides, and shallows, more than 75% of the time the ship would skip them anyways. Neither port is great for tendering. Last winter, the Dream rarely anchored at Playa, if at all, nor the winter before at Cancun. The Dream is significantly smaller than the Spirit or Sun, if it can't stop there, neither could they.

I'd expect an extra at sea day is what you'll get even if NCL included either Cancun or Playa in the itinerary.

for this december, if we get to go..we will just take what they give us. i was really planning the "ruins" for this port, but will make do with a sea day, if i really have to. just have to think of a way to keep DH out of the casino if we do have a extra sea day.

Add me to the list of Feb 08 Spirit passengers waiting to see the new route. Of course, I love a day at sea - more time to spend in the spa and by the pool - but DH was really looking forward to the shore days and photography opportunities.

Hey if you are coming on the Presidents week cruise please join our roll call! Yes, I suppose we will all be waiting. Gosh I hope it is another port!

LOL!

Have you posted into the roll call thread yet for Predent's week on the Spirit? Or is there another that I missed?

Here's the one I started back in April...

Check that, it appears another roll call thread was started while we were cruising Alaska! Figures, a 3rd was started yesterday as well.

I emailed a request to merge the 3 threads.
