Son is "almost" age 21

I have a son who will be just days short of attaining age 21. He is happy he will be able to experience the casino, but wondering if I can order him a glass of wine or beer with dinner, or lounges?

Eddie

Not really sure about the answer to your question.........but would like to know can't they go into the casino and gamble when they are 18. I would try to sneak my kid a drink in the lounge if he really wanted one. Last Feb we cruised to Curacao and the drinking age was 16. That was cool for my 17 year old at the time.

If he turns 21 while on the cruise you can get his sea pass card updated at guest relations on his birthday. If he is under 21 the whole cruise then technically No you can't although you probably won't have any problem doing it.

I think whatever age you are when you start your cruise is the age you stay. If you turn 21 during the cruise, you are still listed as being 20.

The drinking age is 21 and it is illegal to "sneak" a drink to anyone younger! I personally would not like the idea of my 17yo drinking, but that is just me!

Funny you should ask this question!! My DH and I were looking at some old Cruise Compass' for our upcoming AOS cruise and came across this:

"Guests 18-20 years of age are welcome to enjoy beer and wine if a parent or legal guardian has signed an authorization form.......".

This compass is a year old so things could have changed since then. This was printed directly under the section that listed the bars and hours of operation. It's worth a shot!! I am sure our kids would have liked to have known about this a couple of years ago!!

My nephew will be turning 21 on our cruise next year and everyone I've talked to at RCCL has said it will be NO problem to get his sea pass updated on his birthday. They said the make an exception to the standard "age at sailing" for those turning 21.

I would have felt like that when my children were small but now knowing how responsible my almost 18 year old is I feel different. My daughter on the other hand is not responible and I feel the opposite with her. I am just wondering are your children around the ages they are in the picture. That might be why you see it different then I do.

Those are my grandbabies!!:D My kids are 20, 18, and 16. My 20 year old is the momma of the 2 munchkins in my avatar, and I know she drinks a beer once in a while and i have no problem with that. My son is 18 and his dad, my ex, has let him drink a beer now and then and I don't like it a bit!! No problems, so far, with my 16yo daughter! :)

From what I understand, the drinking age on cruiseships has been flip-flopping back and forth for some time now. When we booked our very first cruise back in the summer of 2001, the drinking age had just been changed back to 21, it was 18 the year before (our cruise was to be in 2002). Then 911 happened and it was changed back to 18 to try to get more people to travel again. My son was 19 so he was able to drink when originally he wouldn't have been.

I think it depends on where you are sailing...last year Sept. we went to Bermuda and drinking beer & wine with parents permission for 18-21yo was allowed...but on Alaska cruise in August it was 21 and if you turned 21 while sailing, you could not be updated. Has anyone done Bermuda this year recently? was it ok for 18-21yo to drink...

The whole policy changed last July for and they no longer do the waiver except from Europe and South America. Other than those it is 21.

If the drinking age in the departure port is under 21, then the waiver for guests 18-20 applies. See the guest conduct form:

According to my read of the policy, ships departing Canada should also permit 19-20 year olds to get beer and wine with parental approval.

Nope, the drinking age waiver only applies to cruises not departing from the North American continent.

This policy has changed recently and with a few exceptions, the drinking age is 21 and the parental waiver no longer exists for cruises starting in North America. I believe that the exceptions have to do with cruises in Europe.

All I can say about this is-Get it in writing before you go. My daughter turned 21 on our sail date in March and we had nothing but problems with the whole drinking thing the whole week. She did have a regular over 21 sea pass card, but on our first night in the club she was carded by a waiter who thought the policy was that you had to be 21 before the sail date, so he flagged her as underage. We had to go down to the purser's desk to straighten it out, only to be told that the waiter was correct, she was underage because the policy was age as of reservation. I spoke to 3 other people before a supervisor stepped in and said it was age as of sail date and took her off the Do Not Serve list. We still had a couple of more problems throughout the week that required additional trips to the purser's desk. By the end of the cruise, they knew her by name. So many different employees have different ideas as to what the policy really is, so unless you have it in writing, I wish you luck.

This is correct. If they turn 21 during the cruise you can have their Seapass updated and this will tell you exactly what you need to do. This is the currect RCCL Guest Code Policy and it covers this issue, dress codes, etc. :)

Print it out if you want and bring it onboard
