LibLively Posted September 14, 2007 #1 Share Posted September 14, 2007 We just returned from a cruise where one stop was Rostock. Most cruise lines stop here as a gateway to a Berlin trip, but the one we were offered was 12 hours in duration, and we just didn't want to do an excursion with a total of 6 hours on a bus and 6 hours in Berlin. Some people do it and love the trip, but for those of you who opt not to do the trip, you do have another option. We toured Rostock with the ship ( some people went on their own) in the morning, and it was actually quite a nice little town with a lovely pedestrian downtown area. There were some very nice examples of Hanseatic buildings and a beautiful small convent with interesting historical exhibits. In the afternoon, we strolled Warnemunde, which was within walking distance of the ship. There was a great fish market with yummy looking smoked fish and fresh baked bread (weekends only, I believe), and a beautiful harbor boulevard lined with cafes and lovely flowers. Walking a bit further, you get to a large sandy beach, and on the day we were there, the skies were filled with kites! This port actually supplied us with a very nice relaxing day which we ended up enjoying tremendously.
eh2zed Posted September 14, 2007 #2 Share Posted September 14, 2007 We did essentially the same our day in Warnemunde. Nice spot. And they give you a very pleasant farewell as you cast off.
skandls Posted September 15, 2007 #3 Share Posted September 15, 2007 We too did not want the long day in Berlin too much travel time, too much to see in Berlin and too much bus time. Warnemunde and Rostock were very charming and made a great port day.

Thanks GlibLib: It was thoughtful of you to post an alternative you chose and obviously enjoyed versus a long trip into Berlin. Had been wondering what a viable option might be. Have printed it and will probably do likewise next June. Also nice to see "dittos" from eh2zed and skandls..thanks to you all as well. PLG3 Posted September 27, 2007 #5 Share Posted September 27, 2007 We are in the process of returning from the Norwegian Dream's last cruise of the Baltic (currently cooling our heels at Heathrow - about 7 hours between bus drop off and flight). Our first port on the cruise was Warnemunde. We opted to just hang around the town and it was wonderful. Nice town with a lovely wide beach. The weather could not have been any better - quite warm for this time of the season and this bought out lots of folks into the town and along the beach. We grabbed a very nice lunch down along the canal in town. In the evening, there was a "party" down by the pier with life music (radio broadcast) and plenty of food, which we opted for instead of the ship's offering (no idea what they had that night!) When the ship left Warnemunde, they set of fireworks. The Dream also passed through the Kiel Canal for the last time. Great passage. It was absolutely fascninating to see all the people who came out to wave good-bye to the ship on her last passage through the canal. All in all, a wonderful area to visit. - Stoney from northern Virginia
