Canary Islands - Guide Books?

I can't find any guide books on the Canary Islands. I tried Amazon - zero. Does anyone have some suggestions? We're leaving for Southampton on October 3rd.

There are travel/guides books on the Canary Islands at Amazon. Don't know if any good as I have not rec'd them yet. Google: Canary Islands & pick up link for them there. That's how I found them.

Hope you've been able to find guides on the islands OK by now, but if there's anything you need to know about Tenerife, I've been resident here for 15 years and can probably point you in the right direction.

 

With regards to the fires, there was a lot of misinformation in the press. They never did affect tourists or tourism in any way whatsoever. The most that tourists knew of the fires was smoke in the sky way above them. In fact, I've read reports where people thought it was storm clouds only.

 

I happen to have been one of the people evacuated when the fire hit Tenerife at the end of July, but only because I live in a mountainous area on the north of the island, well away from tourist areas.

 

One village near us, Masca, that is visited by tourists on day trips, did have 6 houses destroyed, the gorge there was closed (originally for fire damage) and some of the mountain picnic / BBQ areas remain closed to prevent fire risks, but that is the entire extent of any effect on visitors.

Remember the Canary Islands are part of Spain and they get good coverage in all of the Spanish travel books. I spent 11 days there at Xmas last year and found that the highlights were covered by Fodors, Frommers, etc.

Tucats I have a couple of questions. I am on a cruise ship that stops in Tenerife for only a few hours in November. How hard is it to get to the memorial for the Pan Am/KLM accident from the port and can you give me suggestions on thing "not to miss" on a short visit to Tenerife?

It was the north airport that the crash occurred on, so I imagine the memorial is near that airport. If you are arriving at the Santa Cruz port it should be close. There is another port near Playa de Las Americas which would be quite a bit of a longer drive. You need to verify the actual port your cruise will use and then do a search to find the location of the memorial. There are lots of cabs and cars on Tenerife, so getting around should be easy. Lots of tourists.

Our local library has a Friends of the Library Book store and they have a travel section. I get many of my travel books there. It supports the library, recycles books and the cost is great.

 

Also try some of you local thrift shops. in our community they are a great source of travel reading.
