Just found this list out on FoxNews.com

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,296354,00.html

and it amused the heck out of me.

Two pairs of undies per day??? One per day plus a few spares. I take my old ones and then throw them away.

I don't take two sets of PJs. I don't OWN four swimsuits, much less TWO coverups. The only time I take jeans is if I have an excursion (like horseback riding) that they might be necessary for.

Taking all those shoes would mean taking nearly every pair in my closet!

I take slacks and skirts that can be used for daytimes as well as evenings (I love the broomstick skirts, they're very comfortable in hot weather, are modest, and take very little room to pack - and of course, you NEVER have to iron them!)

I just got back from my first cruise, and I used the above packing list as guidelines in getting ready. Just a few notes that I found helpful:

Those big office supply clips are wonderful for attaching to the bottom of the shower curtain. It really helps to keep the water from getting all over the bathroom floor. Also, these are great, if you want to clip your swimsuit to one of the chairs on your balcony to air dry.

DEFINITELY used the power strip.

My hubby brought his X-box, and had no problem hooking it to the television. We were able to watch DVD's while in the room, and when he had down time, he would play a game or two.

Take comfortable shoes.

Take some sort of seasickness medication, or wear the wrist bands. I took Bonine every day and did not have any problems. However, I could always feel the ship moving, and we had very smooth sailing. I can't imagine how it would have been if I had not taken the Bonine.

I printed out the week forecast from the weather channel for my ports of call. That way I had an idea of what type of weather to pack for on my trip, and made a few last minute adjustments the night before we left.

Also, I forgot to mention clear packing tape. It is great for laminating and strengthening your ship luggage tags, and handy for unexpected repairs.

I wish I had taken an alarm clock. I did not think I would want one, but I realized how much I missed knowing the time, especially when I was trying to get to one of the scheduled activities.

The xbox is a really cool idea, though I'd like to get away from it, but....If my girlfriend and I want to go dancing or something or stay out late, we won't feel bad leaving the husbands to do whatever, and they can't just sit in the casino all night, we would be broke, unless they got lucky!!! Thanks!!

Oh, I also don't know if I noticed if anyone said earplugs, didn't need them on our first cruise but read a review of a different cruise and the reviewer said they would have been handy for them, I will pack them this time!!

To tape up the girls if you can't wear a bra.

A warning - test tape on your skin before ever doing this, some skin is very sensitive to tape and you can peel off skin :o

I use this site to get started, especially if I'm traveling someplace new. I really like the map feature as it recommends things to pack based on where you are traveling. You can also input the size of your suitcase (small, medium, etc.) and it will tailor the list accordingly.

What has helped me over the years is the fact that I use one of my other bedrooms and place the clothes on the bed. I do this about two to three weeks prior to cruising. And then I simply go in and out of that room, looking at the outfits, deciding if I am packing too much or too little, if I like the combinations, etc. It's really worked well, and I definately do not overpack! :p

For our recent HAL Carribean cruise:

Things I'm glad I brought:

Three swimsuits (wore them all)

A couple of pairs of basic color shorts with pockets (Wore around ship in

the daytime and over swimsuit for beach excursions)

Plenty of tank tops (see above)

A couple of dressy, wellfitting sundresses in a color and style I really love (I brought 5, but wore the same 2 multiple times)

A well-fitting bra and comfortable underwear (I don't agree with those who say bring raggedy ones and discard them)

Meds for indigestion and headache

Travel knit skirt and top

A couple of pretty shawls

Comfortable walking shoes and a pair of black sandals that go with

most everything

Small black faux-patent wristlet

Classic pearl necklace and earrings

(Notice a theme here - I wore the most comfortable and versatile things)

Brought but did not use:

Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and lotion (used the great Elemis products provided)

Long pants

About 1/3 of the clothes and Jewelry

Wish I'd brought:

Good book light

Although I tend to pack light, I'll bet that if I dumped my carry on and toiletry kit onto the bed it would make a lengthy list :p

I see items here that I do carry along, yet I don't have on my packing list as they are always in my travel kit. Over the years I've learned what works and what is a waste of space and I keep learning every trip we take. I keep my kit packed all the time, so I don't have to hunt and search, or worse forget essential items when traveling.

In the interior pockets of my carry on case I always have a couple of clothespins and a tiny book light, the book light doubles as a flashlight for going to the loo in the middle of the night (no nightlight or flashlight needs to be packed then). My first aid kit holds a lot of what is mentioned on these lists, but I only have a sampling of most items, so it takes the space of a small cosmetic bag.

Essential needs will be different for everyone, so it's great to view these lists, but not pack what you wouldn't have thought of yourself. Go through your own routine and take those items, just because you see it here and think "what if?" is where you need to stop.

I'd love it if cruise ships started having a purchase of luxury quality, basic toiletry items in their gift sections. I won't use most of the mystery stuff that is provided in most cabins. Since we don't cruise in suites, we aren't supplied with luxury items such as Elemis. Maybe I'll start putting this on a comment card when I cruise next :)

I do exactly the same thing! I lay my outfits out on the bed in the guest room. I put whatever jewelry I'm wearing with each outfit in separate, small plastic bags. Then when I get ready to pack its really easy, and I rarely forget anything! Its easy to mix and match stuff when its all laid out right in front of you! Plus, its fun!!!!:D

Thanks everyone for the lists! I started packing this past weekend for our trip that leaves this Saturday and after looking through the lists I realized I forgot a ton of things! Thanks everyone!

A couple of things I deem "necessary" that were not on any of the lists that I saw - the shoe pocket thingy to hang in the bathroom, and a small pop-up hamper. The pocket thingy is great for keeping things organized (I travel with the DH and 13 yr DS, so there's never enough room in the bathroom for all our stuff. The hamper keeps the room neat. When we pack to go home I just toss all the dirty clothes into a foldup bag I always bring along, leaving space in the suitcases for stuff I buy on the trip!

Loving all the extra hints!

I'll add one more thing about the pop-up hamper for dirty clothes, I use scented waste-basket liners and put whites in one, mediums in another, dark clothes in another, etc. and as they fill up, tie them off so that when it's time to pack I "squish" them into rolling duffle. It's great when you get home too - no sorting involved.
