CleoPat Posted October 8, 2007 #1 Share Posted October 8, 2007 Is it anywhere near St. Mark's?
pvmkmyer Posted October 8, 2007 #2 Share Posted October 8, 2007 No, it's not. It is on the mainland, just before you cross the lagoon to Venice. However, Venice is very small. The cruise ships normally run a shuttle from the ships to a pier near Piazza San Marco.
helpthejuggler Posted October 8, 2007 #3 Share Posted October 8, 2007 http://jssgallery.org/Essay/Venice/VeniceLargeMap.htm We docked with a couple of other ships at the Bacino della Statione Marittima (Far left side). St. Marks is at the far right end of the Grand Canal (Piazza S Marco). If you want to make your own way to St. Marks you can get a Water Bus (Vapporetto) right outside the Train Station (Stazione Ferroviaria ...see the train track line). This is no too far to find and will be easy to get directions to. Single ticket (approx 6 EURO) to St. Marks or get a full day pass (guess 12/13 EURO). This water bus goes all along the Grand Canal to San Marco and is a great experience (but will be busy). When you get on the water bus check how many stops it is making. The quick one makes around 5 stops...around 30 minutes. The slower one stops many times takes longer.
CleoPat Posted October 8, 2007 Author #4 Share Posted October 8, 2007 Thanks. I wondered if the ships would run a shuttle or something if it wasn't near St. Marks. My mom is 80 so I don't want to be wandering around in and out of transportation or walking that much. Want to make it as easy as possible for her. :)

Sounds like you've been there.
Duff Man Posted October 9, 2007 #6 Share Posted October 9, 2007 Rather than fight the cruise crowds trying to shuttle, we walked to/from Piazza Roma, then took the Vaporetto from there. It's about 1 to 1 1/2 mile walk from the port.
Taf Posted October 9, 2007 #7 Share Posted October 9, 2007 Some ships do don`t dock in the marina, but use a pier near to St. Marks square itself - a short walk away. It depends on whether you ship is visiting for the day or staying overnight and checking in passengers. The Marina port area is used for overnight stops and initial boarding/disembarking as this is where the luggage areas & check-in are dealt with. If you are just a day visitor to Venice, maybe you will be lucky and dock in the centre.

Sorry to disagree but Piazzale Roma is only 10 maybe 15 at most minutes from the enrance to the main port area. more like 1/2 mile I'd say
LCW Posted October 9, 2007 #9 Share Posted October 9, 2007 Tried searching but didn't see a specific response. How long is the shuttle ride between the ship and St. Mark's? We're trying to plan out a schedule and need to figure out how long to plan in between activities. Tks.
