helenb Posted August 20, 2008 #52 Share Posted August 20, 2008 If that is the case, where would be the best zoo/wildlife park to go to see all the Austrailian animals up close? I love animals!! We will be in several other ports in New Zealand and Melborne for a day and Sydney for 3 days when we arrive. We visited the Featherdale Wildlife Park in Sydney as part of our Blue Mountains tour. It was wonderful and they have one-one one petting with kangaroos, a koala, and giant snakes! We also went to the Penguin sanctuary in Dunedin. moojar Posted August 21, 2008 #53 Share Posted August 21, 2008 We visited the Featherdale Wildlife Park in Sydney as part of our Blue Mountains tour. It was wonderful and they have one-one one petting with kangaroos, a koala, and giant snakes! We also went to the Penguin sanctuary in Dunedin. I recommend Featherdale as well for the koala and kangaroo petting, if you want to see wildlife while in Sydney: http://www.featherdale.com.au. It is around a 1 hour drive from the Sydney CBD. The other exhibits were small and old-fashioned, but you would want to pet the native wildlife and this is where you do it. They even have kookaburras and emus you can get up close with. There is a glitzy new facility at Darling Harbour (right on the edge of the CBD): http://www.sydneywildlifeworld.com.au/. I have not been to this one, so cannot comment. Expect high prices as it is on prime real estate. This travel article compares the two: http://www.theage.com.au/news/new-south-wales/at-home-among-the-gum-trees/2006/11/08/1162661745256.html. It recommends Featherdale, but the journalist did tour the other one in the first week of operation. I know they have since added kangaroos. A third park I know of in Sydney is http://www.koalaparksanctuary.com.au . That can be reached by tollways from the CBD, so only 25 minutes or so driving time. I drive past here on my way to work and often see a few tour buses parked outside, so they must be doing something right. I know someone who went there, and besides the regular native animal petting, you can pet wombats and have a go at sheep shearing. Hope this helps! JAKE3337 Posted August 22, 2008 #54 Share Posted August 22, 2008 Thank you Moojar & HelenB. Wendy also really highly recommended the Koala Park Santuary. If we have time we will try both! Angela
