What if there weren't cruises.....

For my own curiosity....if cruises did not exist then where would you go for your vacation? To be fair it should be somewhere that would cost about as much as a cruise.

My answer: VIVA LAS VEGAS !!!!!:D

Just wondering what others would do.

We've been on more land vacations than cruises. Been to Las Vegas several times as well as Hawaii, Mexico and Caribbean. Would return to the Caribbean and stay at an AI resort on a terrific beach.

Tough question - Not sure I would be taking 7 day + vacations on land but rather more long weekends. Too easy for the office to find me on land and I end up spending half the time in the room online working.

I could not spend a week on any beach or single island except in Hawaii. The travel time demands a longer then 7 day vacation and cost makes it an every 4-5 year venture. I would need to combine golf, fishing and beach. Vegas works every couple of years but a week there could bankrupt you. Golf tour to Scottland possible but not something you can do every year or several time a year.

I cruise because it offers true separation from the real world, daily variety, and a new island or location everyday. To to that without cruisng would be a nightmare. I never understood those that did the 7 day 3 island Hawaii tours.

I agree shoreguy...without cruises life would be a nightmare.

I do have to agree with everyone though...vegas is expensive, but it can be cheap if you don't mind eating at the cheap buffets and stay aware from the casinos.

I live in NJ so I might also consider a coast to coast drive...see the good old USA. Don't think a lot of people have driven coast to coast. The one thing that stops me from doing so is the ride....that is a lot of time in a car. I would much rather spend that amount of time on a boat.

has to be Viva Las Vegas first if no cruises; for DH Viva is still first I think. Next to Viva and the cruise scene is a week on almost any Caribbean Island especially if they have gamblin as well; make that ARuba please!! NMNita

If there was no cruising, I'd go to Europe. I can have a great time in Europe for what people spend to go to Hawaii. We do love Vegas...actually getting married there in less than a month! But a week in Vegas would be too long. So Europe it is. No Caribbean for me. I don't like the beach. Quite ironic becasue I love to cruise so much.

ROAD TRIP!

Actually we usually take a road trip once a year. This year we are missing out on our week long journey by car and cruising instead :)

I go to Vegas about 6 times a year, it is a 5 hour drive so that is not considered a road trip to me anyway ;)

I would also say Las Vegas- there were some great airfare rates(less than 1/2 of the regular fare) posted online yesterday but by the time I got ahold of hubby to see if he wanted to go- the flights were sold out...bummer.

We had a fabulous vacation in the Florida Keys, stayed in a lighthouse on Marathon Key, I would do that again, but NOT during hurricane season.

Our dream vacation will be to New Zealand, DH lived there '79-'81 and really wants to go back. I think a nice NZ cruise would be good :D

Besides,if there were no cruises, what would I do with all the spare time I would have without cruise critic?

I love Las Vegas and it's always a good alternative to me for a vacation. However, as others have pointed out, a full week is too long for me. I usually go for 4, maybe 5, days.

A weeklong trip is enough time for a baseball road trip. I am a huge baseball fan and one of my goals is to visit every major league baseball stadium. It's actually a very elusive goal because every time I visit one or two stadiums, they build a new one. Of course, that gives me good reason for another trip.

A week gives me enough time to fly to Chicago, rent a car, visit Wrigley and Comiskey (I cringe when I have to call it US Cellular Field), drive down to St. Louis to visit Busch Stadium, maybe even Branson.

My last road trip included flying to LA to visit Dodger Stadium and Edison Field, then driving down to San Diego to see the Padres play at Qualcomm Stadium, which was replaced this year by a spanking new stadium in downtown SD.

Vegas, Orlando are out since I have to go so often thoughout the year for work. I can only take Vegas for 3-4 days at a time. I would go to Europe, Canada, Asia. In the US AZ, Dallas, anywhere in CA, Portland, are all great places. I'm fortunate that I have friends who work in the travel industry so I always get free passes and use the points I get from business travel for car rentals/hotel stays. The best deal ever was going to Singapore business class for 400 for 3 people using a friends buddy passes

Don't even think about no cruise ships. But, if that nightmare came to pass, I have to agree with the Caribbean, or Mexico. Hawaii is beautiful, but a little expensive for a trip every year. Went to Las Vegas a couple of years ago, and it was a waste of time. (We went for a wedding, and it only lasted four months) Where else can you go for seven days, room, food, entertainment for around 5 or 6 hundred dollars per person?

Vegas but I do that anyway. Not expensive actually. I go for under 400 for 5 days usually because I get very inexpensive hotel rooms as a past player and book airfare with miles or buy the under 200 fares. Vegas is the cheapest vacation I ever take.

Europe is also a great place but not cheap if you want to stay in nice places which I do.

But I still love my cruises!j Thanksgiving, come on! Next boat trip.

Hmmmm, if not cruising, then I would be working on my travel goals to visit all former communist countries in Eastern Europe...plus Cuba, to spend New Year's Eve week in Rio de Janeiro, to hang out on the beaches of South Africa, or to spend a week dancing on the island of Ibiza Spain.

2 weeks of Tuscany would beat most other places except maybe for southern France. Maybe Austrialia?

to spend New Year's Eve week in Rio de Janeiro,
We have a fantastic New Year's tradition...every year, me and my two best friends (a married couple; we all met in college) go somewhere for New Years. Every year it's somewhere different and now my fiance comes too. We've done New Orleans, San Francisco, Sydney Australia, Denver, and Atlanta to name some of our destinations and this year it's Paris France! We've been doing this tradition since New Years 1997.

I love staying in a cozy cabin on a lake. I can think of one in particular that we enjoyed. Lake Almanor in CA. A rented log cabin right up from the sandy beach in the Country Club. I know it's not exotic or glitzy, but there's nothing more relaxing than laying on a beach all day and cooling off in a cool lake. They have other fun activities all week, as well. At night we had a big fire in the stone fireplace. No tv. Lots of reading and listening to music. VERY different than a cruise, and in a way, more relaxing....but I love my cruises, too! :D
