We understand that many evacuees may be using the Florida Turnpike to travel. Here are directions from the Turnpike: Option 1: Exit I-4 toward Daytona Beach, then exit onto I-95 north which will take you right into Jacksonville. Option 2: Exit Turnpike at I-75 North, exit at I-10 East into Jacksonville. Many of the backroads through Bradford and Putnam counties may be flooded. Motorists are encouraged to stay on main roads. For road closure/availability updates, people can call 800-342-3557.
Rare Host CJSKIDS Posted September 11, 2004 #215 Share Posted September 11, 2004 Sue, are you staying? I can't believe we're going through this again. I had my family here for 5 days last week from Jupiter to get through Francis and it was so stressful. One week later here we are again. I don't know if we should stay or go. I at least got my grandparents out to NY tomorrow. We have hotel reservations at Disney for 4 nights, but we may be traveling right into the hot bed so to say. Let's keep our fingers crossed that this moves way to the west. Carolyn
sue d. miller Posted September 11, 2004 #216 Share Posted September 11, 2004 We are staying. The only thing I knowis Lee County is telling residents, if you leave, go towad Miami or Ft. Lauderdale!! They think it will be the least hit. I think, but I don't know that you will be ok too!! It all depends how it goes into the keys. I would almost say be ready to leave, and watch the track. If it is west it won't be bad. If it is going into the keys straight up toward you, get in the cat and go across 75. You will have a few hours and you only need two
isujim Posted September 11, 2004 #217 Share Posted September 11, 2004 I just visited the Key West website............talk about eerie pictures......the Hog's Breath Saloon is deserted and all boarded up...........not many people on Duvall Street either........of course there are no cruise ships........wasn't at least at 6pm and can't imagine any would be pulling in...... Should the hurricane hit Key West.........the web shots camera's might provide some pictures.............don't wish this on anyone.......but you might check out their website..........you can certainly tell people took the evacuation serious. MNYTRPS2GO2 Posted September 11, 2004 #220 Share Posted September 11, 2004 Some years back we were in Key West 3 weeks after they were hit by a major hurricane and the clean up was still on. While there we were in a tropical storm that was scary enough. I feel bad for all of you poor people in the path of these hurricanes. I have been keeping a close watch over the past weeks and hope you all stay safe. When I lived south of Miami in the 70's my neighborhood was hit by a Tornado. I know how devistating these disasters can be. I have not been scared away enough to change my mind on wintering there when we retire in a few years. MNYTRPS2GO2 Posted September 11, 2004 #222 Share Posted September 11, 2004 Sue... Yes, I know we'll love it there. I lived there many years ago but was young and had to leave for personnal reasons. We still have not decided what area we want to move to. We spend a lot of our vacation time in Florida and will decide when the time comes. I too am a Massachusetts transplant. I left Miami 30 years ago heading back to Boston with a stop in New Jersey. Never left New Jersey.. Stay safe everyone...
CruisesOnMyMind Posted September 11, 2004 #223 Share Posted September 11, 2004 I also love living here in Florida. It has been a dream come true for me coming from Canada. There is no where else I would rather live. Last night was very hectic here trying to board up. We still have not finished but will in the morning. Then we will take off for SC. Apoligize for acting "out of control" last evening. Some of our neigbors are not able to board up so we have offered our home as a shelter. They will be coming here to spend whatever amount of time they feel is needed. If you are leaving the area and you have a sturdy home, it might help some of your neighbors if they could bunker down for the night some place safer then what they are in. If they have pets most shelters will not take them. Sarasota has opened up 3 shelters that allow pets. I am so happy with that decision as I know my kitty is my child and would never leave him alone. Shelter space is low in some places as a result of Charlie damaging so many. Keep safe everyone.
