mkerner Posted December 10, 2007 #1 Share Posted December 10, 2007 We are on the Volendam for Christmas/New Year's Eve Panama Canal cruise and would like to buy and bring our own wine on board. Does anyone know of a store nearby that is reasonably priced? We are staying at the Comfort Inn Cruise Port South if the helps any. Thanks to all... Northshorecruisers Posted December 10, 2007 #2 Share Posted December 10, 2007 Try posting on the East Coast Departures in the Florida section. "Bequia" is a resident in that area and can tell you just about anything you would like to know.
gilew Posted December 10, 2007 #3 Share Posted December 10, 2007 Hi: There is most likely a Publix grocery store across the street where you could purchase liquor prior to cruising.
Orlandocruiser Posted December 10, 2007 #4 Share Posted December 10, 2007 There is a wine store called Total Wine in Ft Lauderdale. Terrydtx who was on the 11/13 Volendam cruise ordered his wine over the internet and picked it up at the store when he arrived in Ft. Lauderdale. (Check out his review which is I believe posted in the reviews section or a few pages down on this board) There is also a BJ's in the mall area between Stirling and Sheriden Streets in Hollywood if you happen to have a BJ's card. Bj2615 Posted December 10, 2007 #5 Share Posted December 10, 2007 The "Total Wine" store is very close to Port Everglades. Probably less than a mile. You could swing by there on your way. See:http://www.totalwine.com/StoreList.aspx?state=FL&store=904 Have great cruise and a Happy New Year!
Krazy Kruizers Posted December 10, 2007 #6 Share Posted December 10, 2007 Publix and Total wines stores are just off 17th Street in the new Harbor Shop complex just next door to the Embassy Suites.
O2B@C Posted December 10, 2007 #7 Share Posted December 10, 2007 You can place your order online using their website up to 10 days in advance, and then all you have to do is stop by, let them run your credit card, and pick up the already-filled order - saves a lot of time. You can ask to have multiple bottles given to you in a wine box to make carry-on easier. They have a HUGE inventory, a very helpful website, and reasonable prices. If you also want to pick up some sodas, or other items (suntan lotion, etc.), the Publix is right in the same shopping complex. Makes it very simple. WeRockChalkKU Posted December 10, 2007 #8 Share Posted December 10, 2007 Be aware that you can't puchase wine before noon on Sunday. We wish we would have known this and could have stayed at the airport longer so that we could have saved some $. HAL prices were high. A $10 store bottle was $36 on board. I don't mind HAL making some money but think that much markup is too much. Also, hope everyone has a better cab driver than we did. We got to listen to all the reasons why cabs don't like taking people to the port. At least our cab ride back to the airport was fairly uneventful. The taxi coordinator at the port insisted we tip him despite the fact that HAL had someone out there to help with cabs also.
Spender Nui Posted December 11, 2007 #9 Share Posted December 11, 2007 Total Wine is best by far. Great selection and prices. As close as you can get to the port.

SweetP2 Posted December 11, 2007 #11 Share Posted December 11, 2007 Hi there. We had pre-ordered 3 cases of wine (between 4 of us for 3 weeks) several weeks before arriving from Canada. Pre-arranged delivery directly to our hotel in FLL the day (sat) before embarking (sun.). No prepayment was completed until we were physically in FLL. I am not totally sure if we paid the driver directly or gave credit card to manager over the phone earlier when we arranged for delivery time. However, bottomline, we didn't need to leave the comfort of our hotel for the order. Brought luggage cart and a couple of bungees and pre-printed large labels with ship name, date of departure, room # etc... and don't forget the tape to attach labels to wine boxes. Voila...roll right thru, you will need to remove boxes from Luggage carts and put on table for scanning...they were very good humored with us thru the entire process. Actually had many people following us wanting to be our friends :D We had a Veranda room. LOADS of space in the bottom of closets for storing in our room. You can give to wine steward to keep cool. But we stored our own, paid the cabin steward a bit extra to keep our wine bucket full of ice everyday! We enjoyed cooled wine everyday on our balcony! O2B@C Posted December 16, 2007 #13 Share Posted December 16, 2007 Hi there. We had pre-ordered 3 cases of wine (between 4 of us for 3 weeks) several weeks before arriving from Canada. Pre-arranged delivery directly to our hotel in FLL the day (sat) before embarking (sun.). ... Good point - but they only deliver if you place a certain dollar minimum order. Can't remember the amount, but it's on the website. Thanks everyone for the good advice.
