Hi I'm going on a cruise on the Island Escape on 5th Oct,and I want Some in depth[if possible]info on various excursions, I realy want to do them myself and for this thread I'm asking about Civitavecchia...does anyone know the cost of a train ride to Rome,do the trains run frequently especialy return journey? and how long does it take,...once in Rome are the attractions close to each other.Vatican.Collosseum.trevi fountain etc and which is the best order to see them in...also does anyone know how much the trip cost if you use the ships excursion, and any more useful info will be welcome...cheers Keith.

we did rome after our cruise everything is pretty close together with the vatican a little way out, taxis are very easy to get we had to as it was to hot to walk everywhere. there is a tour bus that you can hop on and off i think it is called the110.you can buy your tickets for the colessium in advance and this was great as there was a very long line..http://www.pierreci.it/do/show/ticket/0000000036 the timetable for trains from the port to rome can be found at http://www.ask.co.uk/ix.asp?q=how+long+does+it+take+to+get+from+rome+to+the+port&ac=none&xx=0&qid=E31570AB179D7143B306C26E2DB7C547&p=0&s=1&sp=ix&fn=t&b=0&fo=2&r=10&io=4&fp=4&fr=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Egettingaway%2Ecom%2Fdirectory%2Feurope%2FItlay%2Fcities%2FRome%2Fmain%2Ehtm&adurl= more info is available at http://www.trenitalia.it/ get a good guide book and make a plan of what you want to see it is a matter of choice were you start but it is very easy to get side tracked as there is so much to see. we started with the cistine chapel the line appears very long but it does move quickly.then we went to the vatican no shorts or bare arms they would not let my husband in he was wearing 3/4 pants that came to his shins..then onto the piazza navona and the panthanon. the next day we did the colleseum, the forum the trevi fountain the spanish steps and the shops and just had a wander about.it is a wonderful city we loved it and our 2 kids were very impressed too.dont know the price of excursions on the island escape but look on the princess website and that will give you an idea.http://www.princess.com/home.jsp or celebrity http://www.celebrity.com/ good luck:cool:

Hi jackieN

We are starting our cruise in Rome next year and plan to spend 2 nights pre-cruise there.Could you please tell me where you stayed, what you thought of it and how much it was? We also have 2 children but as they will be nearly 15 and 13 I suspect we will need 2 rooms.

Thanks in advance

Keith, As a general rule there is at least one train per hour. The fare depends on the type of train (the modern express trains are more costly) and the trip will generally take about 1:20 give or take 15 minutes. The fares are generally quite reasonable and round trip should be under $25 (we haven't used this train in 4 years..so I do not know the exact current fare). You can walk from the pier to the station..and depending on your exact docking position the walk will take about 20 minutes (its all flat). You simply exit the port gates..cross the street, turn right..and walk down the sidewalk. The station entrance is right on this street after a good 10 min walk. You will want to buy a "same day return ticket" which used to be a little cheaper than normal round trip tickets (not sure if this is still the case).

hi kool kruiser

we stayed at the holiday inn crowne plaza while it was not as nice as other holiday inns we have stayed in it was fine. we booked thru holiday inn website and it was 100 euros per night. we had one room our kids are 11 and 13 and it was fine. the pool area is nice.it is about 2.5 miles out and there is a shuttle bus that takes you to st.peters twice a day.there is a regular bus stop just outside the hotel and a taxi rank in the grounds. we took mainly taxis because it was so hot.they ranged between 8 euros and 14 euros one way into town. :)

Hi,

Was interested in knowing where you got these quotes? We're looking for May 05 and the prices seem right.

And thanks for the Ship Happens site - it looks interesting!

brahmama- the prices I quoted were ship excursion prices for the Island Escape, which is the ship keith has sailed on. I was on the ship in August. As it is a "budget" cruise line, the prices may be a bit cheaper than those on the more up- market ships.
