Things to do around the port...

We generally have one or two ports each itinerary that we plan on just getting off the ship and wandering around near the port. Is Barbadados a good place to do this? What might be within easy walking distance?

Hello. Someone that just came back from Barbados told me the local bus system is easy to use, not expensive and you can go wherever you want. I guess you just need to know what you want to do. :-)

There's a craft center called Pelican Village

- about a quarter mile from the Port's gate-house.

 

Easy to find. Just ask.

There is a nicely landscaped walkway alongside the bay (on the right side of the street after leaving the port gate). The Pelican Village craft shops are on the left side of the street. Farther down the street we came to a local fish market and were fascinated to watch the people cleaning the various large and small fish that had been brought in by the local fishermen.

If you see a Cheffette diner, stop in for a "roti"... a Caribbean food consisting of a large crepe filled with vegetables and meat in a curry sauce. Delicious!

Available curry fillings for your Roti are..

* All Beef

* Beef and Potato

* All Chicken (both Boneless and with bone so specify boneless,unless you like crunchy surprises!):eek:

* Chicken and Potato (Boneless and with bone...go figure!)

* Vegetarian

 

and maybe others too....sometimes shrimp. sometimes.

 

I prefer the ones with Potato, and definitely the boneless variety.

Never could figure out why people would opt for having the bone included but...:confused:

Roti is a fairly standard 'snack' (I find it quite filling!)

pretty much all over the island - certainly in the City and environs areas..

- not just at the 13 Chefette branches island-wide.

Wife and I often go for a Veggie Roti,

which is filled with boiled Pumpkin, Garbanzo Beans(Channa!) Potato,

Okra if avail., Green Beans and other cool veggie stuff!

 

There's a Chefette(Fontabelle branch) right close to the Port

definitely within walking distance!

Just take the left at the roundabout in front the Port's gatehouse

and walk about 200 yds. and there's yer roti from Chefette!

 

There's also a bus-stop opposite Chefette

where West Coast buses ply the route...when you're done with the roti.

aplmac, since you are from Barbados, we have a question for you. In an earlier post we mentioned leaving the pier and walking down the street, where we came upon what appeared to be a local fish market. Lots of people cleaning all sorts and sizes of fish apparently brought in by local fishermen. It was fascinating. What do you know about this place?

In an earlier post we mentioned leaving the pier and walking down the street,

It was fascinating. What do you know about this place?

It's as old as the hills.

 

It's the old Cheapside Fish Market and, as a little boy of about 6 or 7

I used to go there, at night, with my Dad (this is back in 1956 or '57!)

to buy fish, back when some plentiful nights Flying Fish was like $1 for 80-100 of them :eek:

 

This was before the land area now the Bridgetown Port even existed

because that whole Port area you landed at.. is reclaimed land

- a biiig project carried out in the late 1950s, engulfing Pelican Island!

The Bridgetown Port you know..was officially opened around 1960/61

 

 

 

That fish market's bin there since Adam was a lad, I swear

and I'll bet it still stinks! - I haven't been there for decades!

although I drive right by all the time

How far is Rockley Beach from the cruise dock?

We spent an afternoon at Rockley a couple years ago

but we were on a multi stop tour

 

Rockley Beach - or Accra Beach as we locals call it-

is about 15 mins. by car/cab from the Port (thru or around Bridgetown being the traffic-y bit)

so it's not far, really.

 

Catching a bus back from the beach, into Bridgetown generally

shouldn't be difficult around 3-4 p.m. when it's time to get yerself back to the ship

because the busy coastal hiway 7 passes right by the beach area

right in front of Chefette Rockley(more roti!) :)

-where there's a bus-stop just for you-

and there's always a big blue bus,

or one of the white ZR mini-vans

passing that way,that direction, every 5 mins. MAX.

I'm thinkin I made a goof-up here.:o

 

You probably mean the far-newer Bridgetown Fishing Complex

which is about 20 years old...right next to the abattoir

I think that old Cheapside fish market is now lying derelict..I'll check.

 

 

Maybe you saw a buncha fishing craft out back of this newer,larger fish market

when you were there? That's the Bridgetown Fishing Complex.

Only been in there once maybe twice.

The ambient fragrances aren't exactly encouraging

and I'm wondering about your interest in the place...:confused:

 

 

 

There are two main fishing ports in Barbados

this one in Bridgetown being the larger of the two.

No less significant,however...is Oistins, near the Southern tip of the island.

With similar 'ambient fragrances'! :D
