Short Time in Dover - what to do?

We are on the Century 4/28 sailing. In reviewing the port times I thought we were in Dover for 12 hours like the French ports. But we are not - only until 1:30 PM. I think that makes it too short to go to London.

 

Opinions? Also, if we don't do London is there to do in the Dover area?

See the castle and/or the Roman ruins.

The castle has got to be at or near the top of the list for this sort of stop.

Are they withing walking distance of the port? Or would we need transportation?

The castle is walking distance, although it will be a reasonable amount of exercise up the hill. Have a look at this map - cruise ships dock in the Western Docks.

It is a very long walk. I would suggest taking a taxi. It was not very expensive and the taxi driver showed us where to go to get a taxi for the way back. Then if you walk back you'll have a little energy left. We tried to walk (without a map) and my guess is it is a few miles. As it turned out, we got lost and a woman stopped in her car and then offered us a ride to the front of the port. Just the walk from the highway to where our ship was docked was a hike.

When I was there they offered a shuttle bus to the city centre and to the castle for a small fee.

Yet, I do not know if this done for every ship.
