Rain??

This may be a dumb question but what do you do on the ship if it rains? I'm looking forward to hanging out by the pool and soaking up the sun and drinks, but what happens if it's pouring? I can't stay all day in the casino. I'd be broke before lunch.

We have only ran into rain a couple of times, and both times they were on a sea day on our way up the coast and it was too cold to swim anyway. We ended up in the casino for a while, they had a slots tournament and a black jack tournament going on. We then played bingo. We went to one of the trivia games going on and attended the art auction. And then we went to the card room and played a few games. It really wasn't that bad at all. There are still plenty of things to keep you occupied if it is raining.

For the most part, all day when at sea the ship has scheduled activities. These can range from trivia to shows to arts and crafts-- all kinds of things. You won't be "stuck" in the casino, I promise you! The Compass, Royal Caribbean's daily program, is left in your cabin each evening, and this outlines the next day's activities. Here's a sample I found online for you:

http://www.royalcaribbean.com/content/pdf/CruiseCompass.pdf

The chronological activity list is on pages 3 and 4, and on the real paper Compass, it's perforated so you can tear it out and carry it around on the ship with you. If you bring a highlighter, you can highlight the activities you definitely want to do so that they're easier to find and you don't miss them.

Enjoy!

Bring a paperback or two, or crosswords, suduko, etc. There is always nice little areas that you can curl up in a chair and enjoy some quiet time. There is also a library on each ship for additional books if you need them and there were puzzle sheets each day.

I like to read or play board games up in the Viking Crown lounge. We've also attended all those "napkin folding" and "learn to play the bongo drums" type classes they offer on sea days. On a Voyager/Freedom class ship, go to the ice rink during skating sessions. Even if you don't skate, it's fun to watch the other people. Leisurely lunches in the dining room or Johnny Rockets are also fun on rainy days.

Unless it's a really wide-spread rainstorm, the ship will alter course to get away from the rain, if possible! We once cruised beside a rainstorm for about an hour or so--could see it off the starboard side, raining like hell, but we stayed in the sun! It was great!

For me, it'd be a perfect time to get in a full workout and then relax in steam room, sauna, whirlpool (whatever "heat treat" is available to me on that ship). DH would probably find a movie to watch or spend some time reading.

We'd then find a nice place to sit and people watch, maybe have some drinks and play cards or board games. I'd find a window and watch the ocean as that is always plenty of entertainment for me and storms bring larger waves.

While I don't much care for planned activities, there are usually plenty. If you fear you may become bored, just bring another book. Or maybe plan to use the internet cafe or write post cards.

You should have plenty of options but it never hurts to bring along something you know you'll enjoy doing to pass the time.

I always have books with me. I'm an avid reader. I'm glad to know about the library. I will be on the Sovereign. Do they also have one?

The other activities sound like fun, too.

Sovereign has a library... but I must say the selection may not be so good...

I actually buy books in the "bargain" section of my bookstore or I buy the less expensive paperbacks and if I finish them onboard (and I usually do)... I leave them to be added to the library... this way the crew can enjoy some updated book picks and the next load of passengers will have a few more titles to choose from...

we've only had rain once or twice for no more than a few minutes...my guess is we sail around the storm.....so we have never been at a loss for what to do to fill a few minutes! Even on shore excursions it seems we can somehow get away from any storms.....

But we do always pack a small collapsible umbrella...never used it though!

Have a great trip!

Let's see attend the towel making demonstration, the spa demonstrations, nap, read a book, eat a long lunch in the dining room, nap, get a spa treatment, nap, explore all the corners of the ship, watch bingo (notice I didn't say participate), nap, read a book, etc, etc, etc

We love the self-levelling pool table on Serenade

I stink at pool but I have a lot of fun playin' around

Sitting in a hot tub outside when it's pouring down is really cool....as long as it's not raining SO hard they shut down the pool deck. If it does and you're on the Mariner (or sister ships) go into the fitness center and use that hot tub, it's huge. Next, I suggest a bevvy or two, stroll the shops, take a nap ;) , have a shower then back to bevvy, food, show/movie, shop. I find that the more bevvy's I have the easier it is to put up with the moaners and groaners and the shopping is easier (don't ask DH).

PS "bevvy" is a generic, british term for beverages. I am in no way implying that one must have a beverage in order to have a good time...........yeah, right............it's raining for G*** sake!!:)

  • 2 weeks later...

As it is now, there's a forecast that calls for rain at every stopping point along next week's Jewel voyage. :( Every weather site on the internet says pretty much the same thing.

Unless there's a thunderstorm, we should at least still be able to do the SCUBA trip we've got planned in Belize. But our journey out to the Chichen Itza ruins may have to be cancelled, when tendered in Playa del Carmen. Those are the only two outdoor activities we've got planned next week, other than simply strolling around and lounging in the sun on the ship.

Rain doesn't bother me very much, to tell you the truth. I FAR more prefer rain over the swealtering heat of the summer months. I don't do "HOT!". I've never been able to tollerate it very well. But it hasn't gotten too far above 10 degrees F lately (here in Connecticut) and I was looking forward to at least "some" heat. :(

If we do wind up bagging our trip out to Chichen Itza, does anyone have any other recommendations? The drive out to the site is about 3 hours or so (and then back again of course). It's NOT the kind of thing that ANYONE really wants to do while on vacation. We can drive for a total ofsix hours in the rain, here at home instead. ;)

Actually, rain may give you the excuse to do the indoor activities that you otherwise wouldn't do since it takes away time by the pool.:D Sometimes there are too many things to choose from.

Grab a book and find a quiet, dry place to sit. Go to the photo gallery and look at all the photographs on display. Walk in and out of the shops (that is, if you are not in a port), go to the buffet and enjoy a cup of coffee and a dish of pastries and people watch, find a good place to sit by a window and watch the world drift by, go to your cabin and catch up on your sleep, take in a movie (all ships, the ones I've been on) has a room that shows first-run movies, see if they have any shows or seminars going on, go to the gym and burn up that excess amount of energy, the list is endless. You will be surprise how many things you can do on a ship if you can get by the pool.
