Stolen from cabin?

MISSSNOOPYGIRL

Recommended Posts

Anyone ever have anything stolen from their cabin? I know there's a safe, but anyone ever had like a passport, camera, or jewelry stolen if it was not locked up?

I mean, if so, there would only be 1 person to blame (room steward), and if this happened to you, how did you handle it?

I just don't know if I should be overly cautious on my upcoming cruise and lock everything valuable in the safe or what.

Not necessarily would the room steward be the only person to blame. They leave the doors open when they go back and forth to the cart for supplies. Anyone walking by could slip in when no one's looking...never heard of it happening, but I suppose it does occasionally.

I leave my camera out sometimes, always leave out my MP3 when I'm not using it, anything that I'm charging up the batteries on. Never had a problem. I think if you put something out of sight, it's better than leaving it out to be seen by passers by.

Let's see. Why would you leave your jewelry, money, credit cards, passport lying around if inside your cabin is a perfectly good safe to put it all in ???

Closets and drawers to put your camera, laptop etc in???

So either you don't get out much or you have a thing about posting about potential problems.

Essentially it is called using common sense. Use it.

  I have never had anything stolen but then I always lock anything of value up in the safe. To leave your passport out is never a wise thing to do, they have more value than anything else. Everything else is a no brainer. If it is of value to you, lock it up. Like a poster said, it may not be the room steward, why place that responsibility on him on top of everything else he is responsible for. Have a creat cruise and don't worry about it. Things will be great.

couple of rules I follow:

1. NEVER leave passport, drivers license or any type of ID out.

2. If you don't have the money to replace it, don't leave it out. If your jewelry is not expensive and not family heirlooms and you could go to Kohl's and replace it all in a day without much financial pain, leave it out. If it is your great grandmother's 10 carat diamond tennis bracelet then lock it up!

Once we are allowed into the cabins, jewelry (which always goes in my carry on), wallets, travel docs and ids and all small electronics (phones, pdas, cameras, mp3s) all go into the safe and get locked up and pretty much don't come out unless we need them.

I have on occasion left my ipod in the portable speakers while we are at dinner/the show, but have never had an issue. BUT, if that got stolen, we have more at home or I would get a new one. I'd be pissed at myself for being stupid but unless you put a Nanny-cam in your cabin you can't prove anything.

Sheesh, you really are Snoopy, aren't you?

  • I'm real confused as to what all this cabin assignment lingo means.
  • Is Camp Carnival free?
  • what is the big deal about people not being able to drink their own alcohol on the ship?
  • For those of you who have cruised Disney and Carnival, is there really that big of a difference in kid's activities other than say, $500 or so?
  • We always request the late seating, so if I understand right, I probably have a better chance getting a two top as this is the less crowded and less popular seating option?
  • Is this new? I remember my cell would never work at sea, only at port.
  • Just curious- do you sit at your same assigned tables? Is it usually crowded or empty? Do you sit with others?
  • When you book a cruise? And what ages are discounted?
  • I read a travel article about the Pride saying it is the classy ship of Carnival's fleet. Previous Pride travelers, your thoughts?
  • I'm hearing a lot about how fun these piano bars are. What makes them so much fun? What do you do there? Forgive my ignorance!
  • You're on a CRUISE, is there someplace you have to be? (don't understand the "rushing around" part)

Not to mention the thread started mocking the NCL review. That's just in the past couple of weeks! You HAVE cruised before, right? In one thread, you commented that your husbands books your cruises, so it's not like you're a total newbie.

ANYWAY, back to the question (don't know why I'm bothering to answer though, other than to bring it back on-topic)...

Assuming anything missing must be due to theft by your room steward isn't actually "innocent until proven guilty" is it?

I lock up money & passports. That's it. Camera is with me 99% of the time.

If you are worrying about something being stolen then LOCK IT UP and that eliminates the worry!

That being said....we lock up everything including chargers if they fit in the safe. I leave my good jewelry at home and just take my 'travel' jewelry and if something happens to that I'm not that worried.

We've never had anything like money, cameras, etc. taken but we follow common sense as many others are suggesting and use the safe. There is one other precaution that I would suggest you consider that I have not seen mentioned. If you take any prescription narcotics like pain killers, tranquilizers, etc., do not leave the bottles out where they are easily accessible. Leave out what you need for one day and put the bottle in the safe. On one extended cruise we brought 20-30 day supplies of our meds. Toward the end of the cruise I got the sense that the number of pain pills left in the bottle looked less than it should be. After counting them, I couldn't decide whether I had not counted them correctly before we left or if about five of them had disappeared during the two week cruise. I never accused anyone or had any evidence of theft but I've often wondered about it so now we put them in the safe just to be safe.

There have been a few cases over the years where employees were found to be stealing prescription meds and either selling them or using them for their own enjoyment. Most folks wouldn't miss one or two during a 7 day cruise so theft would be hard to prove once you've gotten back home and find yourself running out of your meds before you should. We have always had terrific stateroom staff who I would never suspect but we have to remember that we are living in the real world so it could happen. Leave these drugs in the safe until needed and you won't have to worry about an employee being tempted.

A little testy aren't we? Last time I checked, this site was for talking about cruises right? And don't worry, there's more questions to come! I'm just pacing myself! Don't break a fingernail answering my questions, I don't need your "priviledged" reply. For your information, I haven't cruised in a while and thought of some questions. If you know everything, why are you on this board?

Well Snoopy, I have never cruised before, but even I know the answer to this one! If you are afraid something will get stolen, lock it up! That's why they put a safe in your cabin! You should lock it up to not only protect yourself, but your cabin attendants as well. If they are making up your room, turn their back for just a minute to run down the hall and get more toilet paper or whatever, someone can come into your room and take what they want. Is your cabin attendant guilty of sealing? No! Bad judgement maybe, but they are the first people that will get blamed. Let's say the door doesn't close completely when you leave for breakfast and somebody manages to get in your cabin. They take what they want, and again, the steward gets the blame. If you leave anything unsecured and it gets stolen, the person you need to blame is the one in the mirror.

I would just like to add that in addition to ALWAYS using the safe for our valuables, I take a couple clear plastic storage bags to put our items in first. Our wallets, passports, cash, casino chips, and camera all go inside the bags and then go in the safe. The reason I do that is because our friend left two $25.00 chips in his cabin safe by mistake. He didn't discover he was 'short' until leaving the ship the last day. Those casino chips are small and could very easily be overlooked, especially if they wedge in the corner of the safe. It's very easy to just pull a plastic bag out of the safe and have ALL your items in view.
