Walkie Talkies

Hi there...has anyone had good success using walkie talkies on a cruise ship? I have heard good and bad things. Do you need a certain amount of distance or a certain number of channels on them for them to work well?? I am thinking about getting some before our next cruise, but I want to make sure I get some that will work!! Thanks!

We bought top of the line motarola 2 ways GMRS radios and they were junk.

 

But, we also found that for 25$ each per sail trip, you can get DECT ships phones from the purser,s desk and they work awsome. We used them and had no trouble at all. 50$ for the pair for the week is way cheeper then buying sompthing that doesent work that well.

 

Definatley worth going that route instead of waisting your money on sompthing that you will only use once. that dont really work all that well on the ship.

Thanks for the info. So, it is a cordless phone that you can use on the ship for $25 each during the cruise. I assume you can get more than 2?

Thanks for the information (wish I knew about them 5 days ago!). Just one question. Do they only work ON the ship or can they pick up signals when you are on shore, say on an excursion?

Our cell phones work on the Ships and we find texting to be a great way to keep in touch!

While out of the country the rates can vary and they can vary according to what plan you normally have..We can call also but the cost of a call can get expensive.

I have used mine when sailing down to the Bahamas and on our Med cruise..Also use it in Amsterdam, Paris, & England..

Just a thought and saves you the hassle of getting any other equipment :)

They just work on ship maby close by on the dock but not too much further then that. yes you can get more then 1. we had 2 of them. but get them as soon as you get on because they do not have lots to rent out.. A little secret for you.. If you have kids in AO 3-5 year olds they give you 1 free for the cruise..

I hope it is. There is nothing more annoying than hearing those beeps coming from all over the ship!!;) Please try not to disturb people who take a cruise to get away from their cell phones, jobs, and otherwise busy life, to try to relax for a few days.

I highly doubt RCCL is banning cell phones as they are always advertising the STAY CONNECTED moto. 14 out of 20 of their ships all have cell phone service access and you can stay connected even once you are away from land. They are reaching out to a market of people who feel they can't leave home without being able to be connected. They are gearing all their new ships to the modern technology, they would have to be crazy to ban this since it would affect their cruising population.

While yes it can be annoying it also is wonderful to know you can be reached and it's much easier to keep in touch with kids on the cruise. Like I said earlier we keep in touch through text messages while on board..noone hears any beeps, or conversations BUT you can communicate with family members.

I don't want to call home or have long converstions, I just want a way to contact my 13 year old on the ship, as I know they start to have more freedom at this age, and don't always know where they are.

If you are cruising during Spring Break, I doubt very seriously you are trying to get away from it all.:)
