JayS Posted February 23, 2008 #1 Share Posted February 23, 2008 I heard an ad on the radio for an Alaska cruise: "In Juneau walk up to the Mendenhall Glacier" Is this feasible or just hype? 3 months to Alaska:p
NancyIL Posted February 23, 2008 #2 Share Posted February 23, 2008 Walk from where? Not from the cruise ship! If you view it from the Visitor Center, you see it across the lake. If you hike the West Glacier Trail, I believe you can access it - but you would need a car or taxi to get to the starting point. http://www.fs.fed.us/r10/tongass/districts/mendenhall/map.html
JayS Posted February 23, 2008 Author #3 Share Posted February 23, 2008 Thanks for the reply. The link states "13 miles from downtown Juneau" a possible walk for some people but not me.:o Some more hype!
Chat Noir Posted February 23, 2008 #4 Share Posted February 23, 2008 Shuttles to Mendenhall are easily accessible near the docks in Juneau. Tickets RT were in the $12 range for round-trip last year. The vending stand is set up in the short distance between dock and town.

PennyAgain Posted February 24, 2008 #6 Share Posted February 24, 2008 Many years ago when the glacier was closer, I was able to rather easily walk fairly near to it and up a trail along the side. It has been retreating quickly since then.
