Help. I have just looked at the Princess Excursions on the Sun Princess cruising down Queensland Coast. The one for the Great Barrier Reef is 229 Australian Dollars. Can anybody out there tell me if we can do these tours under our own steam and if so how do we go about it when we dock at the various ports.:o

A suggestion is to go the Ports of Call board and scroll down to Austrailia. There is a wealth of info there. Just go back to what I call the Table of Contents and scroll down to Ports of Call forum.

Benjis..by booking the Princess excursion you would get conveyed out to the Great Barrier Reef by bus and boat and returned, you also get lunch out there on the dive platform. Did it in 2004 whilst up in the north of Australia on Star Princess. A lot of money yes, but worth it, I think.

Cheers..Les:cool:

We're just back from a Princess excursion to the Great Barrier Reef. This Princess excursion left from Port Douglas and we were so disappointed with it. The coral in the place they took us was definitely dieing and the fish were not very colourful. Friends we travelled with took a private tour out of Cairns and said that the location they were taken to was fabulous, both coral and fish. Google Cains - Great Barrier Reef for private tour operators.

You need to check which port you are considering leaving from. As with all excursions you can always find a cheaper option than the one offered by the ship...BUT you absolutely need to make sure you can get back to the ship on time otherwise is a very expensive exercise. If the ship is calling in Cairns then there are plenty of options.

If you just want a reasonable snorkelling experience you can catch the ferry over to Green Island and snorkel there...it is a nice day trip and quite cheap.

Check out the salt water crocodiles on display over there!!!!

Cairns offers many wonderful experiences....Jabakai is worth a visit too for an introuduction to indigenous Australian culture.
