ykckby Posted February 29, 2008 #1 Share Posted February 29, 2008 I'm sure this has been addressed but three searches came up with nothing..... so forgive me if this is a "repeat". I took my initial Celebrity cruise last year on the Century and loved it. Can anyone tell me if there are plans to redesign/revitalize/rewhatever the Galaxy and/or Mercury? Or is the line's emphasis on the new Soltice group? Admittedly, I ask not knowing what those two ships are like relative to the Century. I'm a Celebrity convert, I do like the smaller ships but more so I found a very different atmosphere on the Century relative to other lines I've sailed. Thanks kim

chessbriar Posted February 29, 2008 #3 Share Posted February 29, 2008 Mercury and Galaxy don't need the extensive work the Century did. While all three are considered sisters, the Century was really it's own ship. When they built Galaxy and Mercury, they made the ships 10% larger by displacemeny. Century approx 70,000 gt, Galaxy and Mercury nearly 78,000. Century didn't have balconies or an aft pool. The balconies were a major part of the refit they did. Now Century they also added the specialty restaurant that Galaxy and Mercury don't have. Mercury was in last year for drydock and updates. Galaxy will be going in for drydock in April. Mercury is my second favorite ship. One more thing as you look to stay away from the M class, even though want to stay away from the larger ships, they don't have that feel. Galaxy and Mercury(78,000) hold 1870 people double occupancy. The M class(91,000)ships hold 1950 people double occupancy. So eventhough the ships are 16.7% larger they only hold 80 more people D/O. Just so you have a comparison over the Centruy (71,545) holds 1808 D/O. You really can't go wrong with any of the Celebrity ships.
Donnaluv2cruise Posted February 29, 2008 #4 Share Posted February 29, 2008 I agree. We sailed on The Constellation a few years ago and loved it. It didn't feel too large to us. Although next week we'll be sailing on The Galaxy, so I'll have a better comparison after that.
ykckby Posted February 29, 2008 Author #5 Share Posted February 29, 2008 Many thanks to all of you for both the specific information as to the changes but also generally about the ships. I did not realize that there was such a difference between the original Century and the other 2 C class. I will look at the M class ships as I've heard wonderful comments. Interestingly I originally booked the Century because I was sailing with my youngest son (20) who has mental retardation and I wanted a shorter (5 days) trip and a smaller ship to avoid some of the "rah rah". We had a great time. This past month we sailed NCL Pearl, a beautiful ship but with a very different feel, and we did have a good time. But....when I asked him which he wanted to sail next year (it's an annual mom/son "thing") he immediately responded "Celebrity". I was amazed but, it's less stimulation, less noise, he can dress up and he said he really loved having the same big dinner table and waiter. He has sailed other lines but even when I asked "well what about xxxxx?" his response is "no thanks, let's do Celebrity". kim
chessbriar Posted February 29, 2008 #6 Share Posted February 29, 2008 Kim, The two of you will love the other ships in the fleet. As you do a little longer cruise, you will find things a little more laid back, but the service and fell of X are there. Welcome to the family. Kathie44 Posted March 1, 2008 #7 Share Posted March 1, 2008 We've sailed Mercury two years in a row. Last year to the Mex. Riv. and this year to Aust/NZ. It's a very nice ship. We sailed Galaxy to the Panama Canal in Feb. '05 and have booked her again to the S. Carib. for next Jan. We had a great time on her in '05 and expect the same next year. We have no qualms about the condition of either ship. Necessary renovations have been done and more are planned. We never use the specialty restaurant anyway, so that is not a concern. You will have a great time on your X cruise!
