Does the QM2 stink?

This is not meant to be a post to start an arguement over smoking. We've all read enough of those.

Instead I am curious about the "stink" factor on the ship. I have read about the stale smell of smoke on the QM2. I also heard comments from people that got off the ship in NYC that even non-smoking areas were bad.

I am sailing the April 16 transatlantic and am concerned about my experience being ruined by the smell. (if I am to believe what I have read and heard) Are there any other non-smokers who can weigh in on the reality of this situation? Is it really that bad or is it exagerated? I am sensitive to smell....especially of the tabacco variety.

This is my first Cunard cruise.

Thanks!

As you can see, I have travelled on the QM2 a few times! My husband and I avoid any place that is smokey, as we find it quite unbearable. We have never had a stateroom that smells, or had to avoid an area of the ship for this reason. The Britannia restaurant and all others are designated non-smoking.

Enjoy your Trans-Atlantic crossing, it will be a wonderful experience. We cannot wait until or next one on the QM2 in October.

As an ex-smoker, I'm particularly sensitive to the smell. As a New Yorker, because of our local laws, I don't encounter cigarette smoke that much, so it was a surprise to smell it onboard QM2 -- in the Golden Lion pub mostly.

But I would have to say that the smell of smoke does not permeate the ship.

I have only heard of a very few sensitive people who have noticed the smell of smoke. The ventilation is excellent, and I have never smelled anything except for just outside Golden Lion Pub after a busy evening. This generally clears up very quickly. I can't imagine that it would ruin or even impact your trip. Have a lovely time!

We had a cabin next to the Churchill Cigar Lounge and while I like the smell of cigars and smoke one occasionally, I didn't want to be 'stunk out' for the whole cruise. Didn't notice any smell unless I walked directly past the lounge; conversely I did not use the casino this trip because I couldn't stand the smell of smoke.

There was often a strong smell of smoke near the elevators - so much so, that many people commented as we waited for the lift. It was no doubt due to the fact that ashtrays are right next to the elevators. The smell from the smoking section of the Golden Lion and the Chartroom often trailed out into the Stairway D section. This affected us as we went to the Queen's Room for the balls and most of our traffice happened to center on D Staircase. Occasionally we would smell smoke in the corridor since passengers smoke in their rooms.

Was it bad? not really, but we certainly noticed it. Our room was smoke free at all times and had excellent ventillation.

Overall, it did not affect our enjoyment. We just stayed away from the crowded bars. They were too noisy for us anyway. We loved the Commodore Club - curiously empty most of the time..and we liked it that way.

I didn't have any problem with smoke smells on the QM - there are designated areas where smoking is permitted and we avoided those. In general the smoke smells are contained and avoidable. On our cruise on the Noordam last year - our cabin had some residue of smokey smell from a previous passenger. We asked our cabin steward to air out the room and he brought in some device that helped clear the air - and we were quite comfortable after that. I am pretty sure the same would be true if necessary on the QM.

Hope this helps.

My parents and several friends have cruised with this ship and a couple of them complain about everything. Soooo, I asked them if smoke smell was a problem any place on this ship. Much to my surprise they said, "no, it had not ever been a problem." Must be true or they would have had letter's and complaints flying and demanding a OBC.

Having just got back from the QM2 (our friends smoke) i found the only place to smell of smoke was the casino (they do have non smoking days) and the side of the Golden Lion, to avoid this area (route to toilets) go out via main entrance, turn left and left again...toilets, no smoke in lungs etc etc....

They even have no smoking on the Pavilion sun deck, to smoke you must go to the bar or seating area, found this particular good as the loungers are packed in like sardines.

All in all as a avid anti smoker i found that Cunard have got it right for thos that do and those that dont...

I am very sensitive to the smell of smoke, in so much as I can often smell smoke in minute amounts. The problems I have found on the ship are in the Commodore club, some times through the air con, though I am told this cannot be the case and when out on your balcony, particularly if your neighbouring cabin guests are smoking out there.

We had one occasion when the guest in the next cabin were tossing their stubs over the side only for them to blow into our balcony: not too pleasant and I am not convinced that smoke does not seep through the connecting door form the next cabin.

That said, we have travelled on QM2 and not noticed smoke all the time we are on board.

Hope you have a smoke free time.

I just returned from my third trip on QM2 and I did not notice smoke smell at all.

However, my son has commented that everytime we use stairwell C he smells smoke. He commented each time we have sailed.

However I really didn't notice any smoke smells. Unfortuneately some passengers smoke- even in the inside cabins. Thankfully our inside 6268 didn't smell of smoke and my little boy didn't smell any either.

The ship is really big and there is smoking in the Golden Lion and the Chart Room but it doesn't permeate. The Commodore Club on deck 9 is non-smoking and was very nice.

I have been on QM2 a number of times, and aside from the recognised smoking areas have never encountered a problem. However, reading all the above posts, I think it quite probable that there are possibly more smokers on some cruises than others. It may also be exaserbated by the weather outside:D

I just completed my 12th voyage on QM2 and have never encountered a problem with smoke smell. Of course, one can expect a smoke smell in smoking areas such as the Churchill's cigar bar but it is just not the case that the ship is permeated with the smell of smoke.

I say, Livingston old chap, perhaps your question should be rephrased to :

"Is there an odor of Smoke on QE2".....currently phrased the question is indicative that the QE2 "stinks" which is a slight against a great cruise ship.... Smoking is a European Tradition, and a British Historical Tradition.....

Hello Travel Guy,

I have been on the Queen Mary 2 for four cruises ( 12, 12, 12, 10 days ) and being I do not smoke and do not like to be in a room with smokers, I did not ever smell the stuff. If you go into a lounge where there are areas for smoking, then your nostrils will get entertained. Even my cabins on the four cruises did not have a smoke smell.

In reference to the word "stink", I have noticed after about two days on board, it is some of the passengers who "stink". It may be due to the fear of being in the shower or bathtub while the ship is in motion.

Enjoy your cruise ......... Terrence

I can't say I noticed a smokey smell anywhere on the ship, though I only went to the Golden Lion once because invited by tablemates - not my favorite space. However, I'm appalled to read that smokers are throwing their cigarette ends over the side. If the ship is moving, this almost always leads to the stubs being blown back into the ship: an enormous fire risk! Please, any smokers out there, don't ever do this!!!

This smoking sensibilty is quite histerical in my opinion- years ago there were no excape from smoke filled rooms, air, whatever. Okay there may be people who are getting real problems when smoke is around. But ex- smokers who are overreacating are just getting a nic fit when they smell smoke- LOL ! Thats why they complain a lot about smokers around. Some may be just envious. When I was on board the QM 2 the smoke smell was not that bad and the airconditioners worked well. Some should see some of our bars and pubs, oh well before the went nonsmoking of course. That really was hard to bear!

Years ago, the building trade handled asbestos, it was in all of our buildings. Why was it stopped, health, the same as smoking in enclosed areas. And if the smoke smell is ok, then why not have a pleasant smell from the sewage machine. It is not just smoke, it is unpleasant smells.

Dear Travel Guy, right on ! You have the correct attitude. Enjoy your time on the Queen Mary 2. When I first saw your title, I got a little concerned because at first glance I thought the word was "sink". Then I realized it was "stink".

Dealing with the latter is better than the former.

As I stated in my previous thread, which no one has disagreed with so far, is some of the "stink" may come from some of your fellow passengers (especially in the elevators).

Bon Voyage! Terrence

Just goes to show that some people are ignorant...and couldnt care less about the saftey of other passengers...It clearly states in the state room, that cig buts/stubs are not to be thrown over board as they can be blown back into the ship..reason fire risk...

In St Kitts some one threw a but over board whilst Docked, it had to be the dock side, and from deck 4....well the Chief security officer (man at arms) ex Royal Marine has a really loud voice.....informed them to come down and pick it up.... (not sure what happened next we went shopping)
