Need urgent info re smoking on Tahitian

After reading this list of questions from the OP, and I think answering her by email a few days ago, I have changed my mind on suggesting the TP.

Anyone that is that sensitive to any smoke for health reasons really needs to book a non-smoking cruise ship. Or at least one that does not allow smoking except for a small area onboard that they would be able to totally avoid. Not one that allows it in the staterooms, balconys and other areas. It sounds like any smoke at all will totally ruin the OP's cruise, and that can not be guaranteed on any Princess ship.

I do hope you find the perfect cruise, but there might be others out there that will be safer for you to vacation on. Best of luck on this quest.

Thanks Cool cruiser! I'm pretty happy with what people are saying. No negatives. (casino I don't care about, and my husband can check out our photos)

Here is a link to the restaurant that had me concerned

http://www.princess.com/learn/ships/ta/deck_plans/ta_deck_5.html

I found this re smoking rules in general:

Smoking is not allowed in the dining rooms, or any other food service area, or in the show lounges and theaters. Smoking is permitted in staterooms, stateroom balconies, and designated areas. As a courtesy to your fellow passengers, please refrain from smoking pipes and cigars in all public rooms.

I've searched and can't find the spot that actually listed the places you are allowed to smoke.

Just one other funny ?? thing- the room the agent reserved for us doesn't exist on the deck plans!!!

FYI, we all know what the smoking rules are, it has been noted on threads on these boards ad nauseum, but, I don't know anybody except for you, that sobbed all night after finding out smoking was permitted on the pool deck. That being said, anybody that sensitive to smoke, should find another vacation source. You obviously weren't happy on the Explorer of the Seas either.

If there is any place that it should be banned is in the casino, where people are trying to spend money.

Actually, most studies have shown that smokers tend to gamble more than nonsmokers...here in Kansas City, the big roadblock to a smoking ban is the casinos...a smoker on a losing streak will light up another and try to recoup his losses....if he has to walk outside to have that cigarette, he's far more likely to cut his losses and go home, or go to another casino where he might feel the odds are in his favor.

heartofamerica, I'm sure that you are right, however there are a lot more people that don't smoke nowadays than smoke. The non-smokers will just stay away if there is too much smoke, the smokers can at least take a smoke break & come back in. I don't know what the percentages are, but smokers on a ship (I would guess) are far less than 25%.

This is what I was trying to convey.

Just disembarked from the Tahitian Princess on the 29th of March--I didn't notice smoking anywhere--I'm sure that there must have been some somewhere--

I simply looked at the deck plans.

And in the faq it states that the club bar is the only place that cigar smoking is allowed.

If you look at the deck plan, the bar is right beside the restaurant. I'm sure it's fine way inside, but I wouldn't be able to sit at a table near that entrance.

Going through the Club Bar is the only way in and out of the Dining Room. Do you really think any cruise line would force all passengers to go through a cigar smoke-filled-room to to get to the Dining Room?

Hello,

I am very allergic to cigarette smoke. One whiff and I start coughing. I don't stop until minutes after I leave the smoky area. I was on both the dawn and the diamond princess and never encountered any problems. Probably the only place I could not go and stay very long was the casino. The diamond princess did have a no smoking area in the casino though. I also got an occassional whiff from my balcony. The guy two cabins below loved smoking his cigar. Blah.

We hate smoke & wish they didn't allow it on any ship- That being said I will have to say that the smoke problem on any of the Princess ships is something that can be avoided in most circumstances. Just stay clear of the casino, cigar bar area, smoking side of the pool area & most of the time you'll be OK with the problem. Sure, they'll be some inconsiderate smokers who'll walk around puffing away without any concerns but you'll find that to be the exception. They've really tried to limit the smoking areas from what it was years ago. No matter where you go, even near you home, you have problems no doubt so why should you think a cruise ship would be any worse? The biggest problems with smoke these days seem to be on the balconies where a chain smoking neighbor can limit you enjoyment to fresh air.

I thought the Ohio suggestion was funny too. Actually, I could just stay home. Ontario is totally smoke free. I can't remember the last time I ran into smoke hear, except maybe passing someone while I'm out running.

This whole nightmare was caused by incompetent princess employees who stated that there were no smoking restrictions on the outside deck.

We've been on 3 RCL cruises. One was bad- inside- the others were fine.

Now, can someone help me loose 15 lbs?!

... cuz you'll just put it all right back on by the end of the cruise. ;)

Actually, I used the gym while on board, and that helped ... a little.

I have to admit, talking about TP and the FP has made me a bit wistful. It really was one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. The snorkling was just unbelievable (somewhere on here is a thread with some underwater pic's I posted). It has completely spoiled me for snorkling in Mexico or the Caribbean. And the TP is just such a beautiful ship, with a wonderful, warm, friendly and helpful crew and staff. We tend to prefer the larger ships, but the TP was just really special.

I have no doubt that you'll have a wonderful cruise!

Haha, I know.

Im sure 12 days in a land-locked state is the perfect thing for someone looking to cruise...

I could be wrong (don't think so tho)) but I think that the northern shore of Ohio is really wet (Lake Erie - part of the Great Lakes) for a land locked state.

Lake Erie looked pretty big last time I looked at it - this morning. Drive along it every day and I see a lots of ships on it. No cruise ships tho icon9.gif

Well, Lake Erie is a heck of a lake thats for sure. I meant that there is no ocean, so there is no cruising.

What date are you booked for the Tahitian Princess? We're on the November 9th sailing.

I just disembarked from the Diamond on Tuesday, and I can state that it was very rare on that ship to catch even a whiff of smoke. The only place we really noticed it was "Churchill's" bar which is a cigar bar, and the doors were left open so the smoke drifted out as one walked by it. But it didn't linger in the air or spread. I think the ships have very good air handling systems. Out on the decks, even the areas where smoking is permitted, there was no problem. The casino had a smoke free evening one day each week, and the casino didn't seem overwhelmingly smoky on the nights when it was allowed. Maybe the Tahitian will do the non-smoking night thing too. The Golden, in November, did it. Maybe it's fleet-wide.

Another thing is that I observed is that the vast majority of smokers are courteous and try to avoid offending non-smokers. I think you have less to fear that you think. Once onboard, when you find out where smoking is permitted, you can try to avoid walking through those areas.

Just off the Tahitian--they did have a no-smoking casino day--I know I saw the sign at least once on the 10 day cruise--

Glad to hear that you have decided to go on the Tahitian Princess to French Polynesia..... You are now headed for the most wonderful cruise of your life to paradise.....

If you have any questions about the trip, ship, activities just ask, I'd be glad to help since we got sooo much help on these boards.

All this talk about FP has me day dreaming of our cruise again. Hope Princess or someone else (that we can afford), decides to put a ship back in FP for the summer. Summer is the best time to cruise there. Can't understand why they would pull out of that time frame, but I'm sure it all boils down to $.

Any how, a suggestion for you. We went up to the hot tub on the TP the first night out of Papeetee. It was around 10pm and we had the whole deck to ourselves. I still remember, full moon, ocean breeze, just the two of us .....started our trip out in a most romantic way.

Have Fun !! Enjoy your anniversary.

I am so envious! I would go back in a heartbeat. In fact, if I could afford it, I'd almost book another FP cruise on the TP before she leaves the itinerary for good.

May I ask a silly question: was Ramona still the bartender in the Club Bar, and was Neville still the Maitr'd for the specialty restaurants? They were both just really wonderful to us during our cruise, and left us with lasting fond memories.

Now I can't stop grinning thinking about it. :D

I've left a message for my ta to cancel. Now I don't know what to do. I can't take a chance- if they are right I would be stuck in my room on sea days. Island days are fine cause I'm not on the ship anyway.

Now I'm just plain depressed! This was to be our 25th anniversary gift to each other.

RUNRGRL - If you need to book a totally smoke free ship I can understand. That is your decision, but from what other posters have written and to throw my 2cents in, smoking is really very localized. I have only been on Princess' largest ships, with thousands of passengers, and not once on any of those cruises did I have a problem with the smoke. On my last cruise on the Emerald, they even had smoke free nights in the casino. That was the first time I experienced that and it was very nice.

I wish you luck and whatever you do, have an excellent cruise.

Yes would love to quit but I am very aware of who is around as it's my problem not theirs. Lets chat the Emerald. Small smoking area poolside which was fine for those wishing a quick smoke and back to another area where seated. Did people with ash trays pooside but I did not do this as why encourage me to smoke more.

CASINO is a disgrace. Never did I light while at the table. I would reserve spot and back away to far wall for quick smoke. On non smoking nights they have a lounge in the Casino (cigar lounge) for smokers. Hell make the casino NON smoking period. If there is a rooom in the casino use it and don't bother others. My wife is an ex-smoker (don't ever go there). She could not enter the casino on smoke nights which is NOT right. I only say this because of the room.

I am sure you will have a good time and Most (almost all) will honor your wishes.

To loose 15 pounds start smoking. I had to say that sorry...:)

Don't know about the Maitr'd--but--I think not for the bartender because the baratender was a male not a Ramona---

Sorry for lack of information
