SNAFL Posted April 10, 2008 #1 Share Posted April 10, 2008 Has anyone taken a Rhine River Cruise? I have a week that I want to spend doing something different. I can fly into Hamburg, Germany and go from there. Will be traveling with husband and his 80+ year old parents. We already have a week at a timeshare in Italy and I'm tacking on a week that will probably begin in Germany because that's where I can fly into using Skymiles. Any info on travleing in Europe and what to do in Germany, whether it includes a Rhine River cruise or not is greatly appreciated.
Rare steamboats Posted April 11, 2008 #2 Share Posted April 11, 2008 Audrey, Hamburg is quite a bit away from the Rhine river. Anyway it´s a great city! Deilmann is doing Elbe river cruises out of Hamburg up to Dresden (but Deilmann is a bit more pricey). Rhine river cruises usually start at Amsterdam (or Basel if you´re going downriver). Flying into Germany and going on a river cruise: There´s only one other option. Fly into Munich and do a Danube river cruise out of Passau (Passau roundtrip). Traveling in Germany is quite easy by using the German Rail. And there´re definitely a lot of places worth visiting in Germany! steamboats
SNAFL Posted April 18, 2008 Author #3 Share Posted April 18, 2008 We have changed our plans to make this a much more manageable trip. We fly into Milan on July 4 and out of Frankfurt on July 16. My husband is wanting to drive from Milan, through Switzerland and into Germany. We don't have a set schedule so we can do what we want along the way. Anyway, what river cruise recommendations do you have for southern Germany? P.S. Obviously we've never traveled to Europe before so excuse any silly questions. Rare steamboats Posted April 18, 2008 #4 Share Posted April 18, 2008 Audrey, I assume that most of the US river cruise companies are already fully booked for July. Most of them also do not offer roundtrips but as example Prage (boarding at Nuremberg) to Budapest. Deilmann does have roundtrip cruises out of Passau (including Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest). Although Frankfurt is located on the Main river you won´t find many cruises starting there. There are some but mainly one way too. With only 12 days of traveling it´ll be hard to find something anyway. steamboats
